Update on my house

Some of you know that I had a house fire in April. This whole thing has and still is a nightmare. Fighting with the insurance company and the bank is really starting to get old.
I just thought i would share some of the progress with you.

Here are some of the pictures of the house. They have started to do the frame work on the roof, and have gutted the interior, but because the bank has not sent me back my check yet (three Fu*%$n weeks now they are suppose to send it within 72 hours) good thing I didn't hold my breath! So they had to stop till we get the check. :) This is way too much stress for me. I'm going to go racing on the 18th for some much needed stress relief!

Wow! that's a good size house - nice home. It's amazing how the bank and insurance companies start complaining very quick when the mortgage or the policy payments are not made on time, however when it's their turn to pay on a claim, it seems to take forever with every excuse in the book! :flame:

Hey Jen,

I sent a letter to the state insurance regulator (or whatever agency it's called, I forget) when the insurance company dragged their feet for 6 months on a claim I had for my Ford when it was rear-ended. I suddenly got a call from the Vice President of claims asking what needed to be done to resolve the problem. After giving him an earful & faxing him a copy of the letter, he had an adjuster take care of it the next day.

If I'm not mistaken, the state insurance regulator works very similar to a public utility commission. They have to apply for rate increases through that agency. If they have tons of complaints, they don't get the increases they ask for. (well, not as much at least.) See what the agency is called in MA & check into it.

Good luck, Bob

Old Moparz has some good advice. When someone pulled out in front of me and we collided I got nothing but grief from the insurance company in part because I had the same insurance company as the lady who hit me. Anyway I was not given what I was told I would be given in the settlement and an acquaintance told me to call my state's insurance commissioner and file a complaint. Mind you this was after the company repeatedly stonewalled me several times over things that they promised to give me to make things right. I swear it wasn't but four days after I called the insurance commissioner and complained that the check came in the mail for everything I was owed. If these insurance companies have too many complaints filed against them with the govt. they can have their license pulled so they usually sit up straight and pay attention when you threaten them with that kind of stuff. If they don't just file a complaint and I bet it'll make short work of them.

Anyway, I'm happy that things seem to be progressing at some level. I hate to see it when frineds go through tough times.

Hope you are able to make some headway with those people, Jen.

I hope that you hired a professional adjuster (and I hope this didn't come too late).  Your oppositions' job is to give you as little as possible.  A professional adjuster is skilled at dealing with the parties, works just for you, and can boost the settlement by 50% or so.  Remember that the people on the other side do it for a living -- you are a beginner at best.  Kim

Good advice

My wifes cousin was an attorney for an insurance company and the lead lawyer would walk around and tell everyone that "It was thier job to find a way to keep the insurance company from  having to pay a single dime on any claim that was filed"

keep that in mind when you deal with them
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be a convenience store NOT a government agency!

Thank you. It is a very large old farm house. I don't know the sq footage, if I had to guess I would say about 3000sq of living space. It is a two family with a finished attic.

Thank you for all the advice. It really sucks not knowing who I can call or what to do next about the big company's.
I have a personal adjuster. He can be a pain in the butt also, but I would not have been able to handle the insurance company myself.

I got the check for the rebuilding of the house and the personal property. I am still waiting for the loss of rent from the insurance company, they have to pay for the lost income for the 2nd floor apartment.

I got the building check from the insurance co. in mid August and sent it to the bank. I got it back in three days, with a note that said the check it wasn't endorsed properly. :eyes: The adjuster I hired didn't put his title on it so he had to put pres. next to his name and I sent the check back to the bank. They got it on the 25th of August. The bank is suppose to send me back 1/3 of the total check in 72 hours. I just got the check from the bank yesterday, almost 4 weeks. :flame: Why would they hold it up so long? Everytime I called I got, it will go in the mail tomorrow. I heard that about 4 times. I had to talk to a manager in the property claims department at the bank to finally get someone to send the check out.   :icon_smile_blackeye:

I'll see you at the track on Sunday NHcharger. Hopefully it wont rain I really need a day away from this house.
I'll get lots of pictures for everyone   .

Most of these companies invest a large percentage of their (YOUR) money.  They will find every way in the book to delay payment.  The longer they hold the money, the more it makes for them and ,in turn, lowers their net payout to you.  Good Luck,  Bob

Hi Jen, you know my feelings toward insurance companies so I won't go there.. I hope you end up ahead of the game when it's all said and done.  At least you don't have your favorite tenant over your head anymore!!

By the way, how did it start??

Good luck at the drags, but don't take out ALL your aggressions on the Dart..  Save some for your old man.. hahaha........

The tenant over my head started it :flame:. She didn't extinguish a cigarette very well one night, threw it in a bucket full of other cigarette butts and it caught the porch on fire. :icon_smile_sad:

Nice to see you are underway with or without the insurance company. shame they always feel like they have to play hardball. Hats off for the patience in not strangling them and chin up. you'll get it done.

And if the wall coverings were lost they will be relaced. PM me.

The wall coverings are safe and sound. Thank you. You're the bestest. :)

Dart - I've always meant to ask - just how many of you are in that house? There's me , the wife and 4 kids in my place and I swear I could fit at least 4 of my houses in yours. I would have a 30 x 30 living room in there and be able to drive a car in as part of the surroundings.

Many years ago - 1974 we helped a guy build his place that we pushed a 1958 Corvette into where the living room would be and then raised the walls up. Yup, sealed inside the house. Last I saw of him was in 1989 and the 'vette was still inside the house.

dart3404

I know it looks big but it is a two family home with a finished attic which was used more for storage.

The apartments are not that big, the rooms are fairly small believe it or not.
I'll post the floor plan.
Both apartments will be the same and the third floor attic Will become a small one bedroom in-law apt. for our uncle.
I couldn't fit a corvette in the living room if i wanted to. lol

I currently have a little motorcycle in my front room, does that count? :icon_smile_big:

Hopefully things go more smoothly for you now, Jen. Have fun at the races!

Whoa CF - is that a 1970 CF70 you got there? Man looks like great shape. 5 of us went to a campsite on CB750s in 1971 and we gave a kid a little ride and showed them how they worked. He had a CT70 with him and for giving him a thrill ride he let us use the CT for the weekend. Lots of fun at 3am being 4 sheets to the wind tearing around the site on that thing. Well one trying their best to drive and 4 trying to catch/tag for their turn. We certainly generated a lot of love from those that thought 3am was prime sleeping time and who alowed a bunch of drunken yahoos into the place. ;D

Hiya, 6Pk.
That's a great memory.

This one is a '70 CT70, alright (automatic). It's a cool little bike, huh? I got a few years ago from a garage sale in 4 boxes & the frame, for $20. After I got it home & cleaned the thing up a bit, I decided that this was something more than just a little beater for my kids to ride & gave it a decent resto (I found a taillight lens after the pic). :icon_smile_big:
I got them a Yamaha Warrior 4-wheeler the next summer instead...I think they overall like it better than the CT70. :icon_smile_approve:

Every now & then I take it (or the kids) for a blast around the neighborhood to keep the gas fresh. It hasn't seen dirt since 2001 (or really since that guy took it apart). ::)

The funny thing is that it's just inside my front door & everyone who comes to the door has a nice comment on it...usually "what's a bike doing in your house?"...quickly folowed by "that's cool!"

Jen, sorry for the hijack. :engel016: :smilielol:
