my rear differential makes a fairly loud whine with the new gears... it happens both when im on the gas and coasting. But the thing i dont understand is that on the lift with the wheels off it makes no noise (or just so little i cant hear it over the mufflers) but when i put the wheels back on it starts making it again.    Does anybody know what is going on in there?

Thanks THMPN73

I've just rebuilt my axle, I fitted all new bearings and replaced the crush sleeve with a solid spacer and shims. I set the pinion bearing preload exactly to spec and set the backlash at 6 thou. It still whines below 45 MPH on the overun but suddenly stops at any higher speed. it's not that loud so I'm happy to just live with it.

Sounds like the pinion depth may be wrong.  The reason it's quiet on the lift is because there's no load on the gears.   You may want to get some gear marking compound and see what the gear contact pattern looks like.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

I tore it apart and increased the pinion depth by .020 and the pattern improved and walah no more whine!
Thanks
