Ever seen one of these before? Back in the 70's MPC put out a model of the 73 Charger in 1/16 scale. Huge sucker, they did a  Ricard Petty Charger in clear plastic. I had one of both a Richard Petty 1/16 scale a regular 73 with a HEMI and a Blower sticking out the hood. Sadly as with most of my models once I hit high school they went the way of most toy models at the time. A M80 and some fire crackers and I would blow them to bits. If you ever seen the first Toy Story movie, I was Sid with plastic models. Any way fast forward to 2007 my I was telling my friend about the models of the charger I used to have and how cool it would be to find one of them again. Well he send me 3 Ebay links, 2 of the models are the Richard Petty 1/16 scale Charger still in the box unbuilt for $300.00   

No way, but the 3rd one was the same Charger I had as a kid for 50.00 did not have the box with it but WHO Cares!!!

A 1/16 scale 73 Charger with Hideaway headlights 426Hemi Blown and in BLACK totally detailed and LOTS of Chrome, Only drawback is the wheels and tire combo, they did the 70's fat tire in the back and skinny in the front. The wheels are slotted chrome mags which I am not wild about. But who cares.

Not as easy to move that one around as it is to move around a 12 inch plastic model.

My plan is to get it on a cart or something this summer so I can start moving it around the garage so i can work on it.

Here are a few pics of the Petty version, YES this car DID have the clear body. BUT it had a big crack down the top of the right fender. SO I superglued it back, bodyfilled it and built the car!

The Day Glo red is TOUGH to do. These are old pictures and the red really does not look splotchy at all.

I rebuilt this one from a ratty built up I got from Ebay.

It was pretty ratty when I got it but with the help of a fellow modeler, who sent me new bumpers and glass, it came out pretty decent.

Cool! I diddnt think hide away headlights were even an option after 72.  Regaurdless cool models.

greeeat, even seller states a 71/72 but is a 73... I can fill the cut out hood and grilles to make it 74...

and make the trunk hump... does the trunk lid opens ?

I'll try to search for decen street tires too... do you think it is posible ? I don't know if hobbie shops sells separated pieces

Trunk does not open, the trunk area is not detailed. I am sure you can find decent street tires by searching the internet, my friend has found some really weird model pieces on the internet so I am sure finding tires and wheels won't be a problem. The rest can be modified to your liking. All it takes is time and plastic body filler.

74 does have a hump on trunk to fit vapor separator humped tank... just 74 had it

Boy that brings back memories.  I had one of those too but it didn't survive, I don't think I blew it up, but it's not around (I think we all did the Sid thing with firecrackers and our model kits).  I have one of the Gneral Lee ones in that scale and it's still around here someplace in a state of partial completion.  I had long forgotten about that 3rd gen model.

Wal-Mart here in Canada sells a white 69 RT with a black stripe on the back.  The body is metal and white with a black vinel roof.  The interior is all black and some of the engine comes pre-painted.  I bought one a few weeks ago but havn't had time to start it.

That's too cool. I have the same model and I'm also making a miniature version of what I want mine to look like someday. Here is a photo of the original box and the model so far. I had to fab the louvers and spoiler.

Nice job pettyfan43.   I had that model when i was a kid.  Threw it out when i had to clean my room before i moved out of my parents house.  Then at a car show a couple years ago i found an original one still in the box and in the plastic for $20!!!  What a deal!  I still have it but dont know if i want to put it together though, then it wont be NOS anymore.

Man if you got that thing within the last ten years for 20 bucks you absolutely stole that baby! The reason I restored a builtup was because they are so expensive now!

Hey Man, can you give a quickie rundown on how you did the quarter windows?

along with my 66, I have a 73 S/E.

I used kinda thin (clear) plastic from a lid from some cheap conatiner and then similar white plastic, cut with an exacto knife by hand. Glued the two together then to the model.

oh ok , I was kind of interested in details. The white part,the louver, did you carve that out of a thick piece of plastic? Is it several pieces put together?

Yes, it is two pieces glued together. One clear to simulate the glass and one white for the louver itself.

I have some of them big 3rd gen Models in a box, two red and one black. One is all there, the other two would probably make one.

Here it is.    Ya now that i think about it i bought this model at Jefferson, WI about 1997 or 1998.  Gosh was that 10 years ago already?  Man i'm getting old..

Heh, I've got one of those too. I put it together when I was 16 or so, sooo...don't shoot me for all the purty colors.
I didn't want to go the whole GL route at the time, but I kept the decal set in case I changed my mind. I did put the push bar on though, but it fell off a couple years ago & I haven't glued it back on.
White seats & door panels. I was gonna paint the window trim chrome, but I was afraid I'd permanently screw it up, so I left it alone.



I was bummed the car didn't have the flip-top gas cap, but it did have a nice chrome cap over the fuel cell. Problem is that you can't see it with the trunk lid permanently closed...so I got a cherry red razor blade & opened it!
I also tinted the back window with actual window tint.



This model kit had a very detailed engine bay for the time.

I wasn't going the GL route with mine either, I was building a replica of a car I owned at the time.  Like you though, I think all the GL stuff is still in the box with the partially completed model.
