Changed The Oil

Today I changed the oil in my 318. I took out the drain plug and drained it into a pan. My dad loosened the oil filter and I said to him dont drop it in the pan. Next thing I know its in the pan and oil splashed everywhere. It only had 4 quarts in it. I put in the full 5 quarts and now the rear seal leaks. I also found out that my oil pressure gauge wasn't working because the contact on the wire was loose. Got it tightened up and the gauge is right in the middle, pretty good for an 82,000 mile engine. Also found the vacuum leak and it idles 10z smoother.

often times with engines that haven't been turned over in a while, the old oil and its horrible viscosity (very thick) is what is providing the "seal" on the main bearings....after an oil change its gone and you have viscous fresh oil that seeps out. Not sure if this is the same as your case, but that's typically the reason for that one. More reason to fire up your car every 2 weeks at the most.

I usually fire it up and let it warm up 2-3 times a week.

I once had a 78 plymouth volarie with a 318, it was an ex cop car, I bought it and it needed a tune up, oil change etc...It had bags of parts loaded in the trunk, I changed the oil and all of a sudden massive rear seal leak! :rotz: Looking through the trunk later I find a lot of empty 80w90 bottles (yes, gear lube!) :brickwall: Apparently that was how they were running it. :icon_smile_blackeye:I ran it on 20w50 and just kept it filled, it was kind of cool if you were mad at the guy behind you, just floor it and it was like the poor mans 007 smoke screen, it dripped right on the Y pipe, poof!

Is it OK to buy some rear seal oil supplement and put it in the stop it?

The seal may have shrunk due to long periods of inactivity. The seal should swell back up once you start driving it a bit. If the leak persists, try using some Shell Rotella-T 15/40 oil in the motor.  ;)
