Whats the best for the money, where to buy and don't say Ebarf.  I know very little about all this new fangled stuff. My resident expert on these matters (daughter) joined the Army. All help appreciated. :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall:

I have a simple pocket camera that's been very reliable & easy to use. I don't need an expensive one with so many features that I need to read the manual everytime I want to take a picture. It's an Olympus, with less than 3 megapixels & a 5X zoom that takes decent enough photos to email & print. You can find it at most retailers like Target, Walmart, & such, I got mine from Staples.

I paid less than $200 for it about 6 years ago with the case, memory card, batteries & charger, & have literally taken 1000's of photos with no trouble. If you need a camera with more features, I have no idea what to tell you, but if you want simple & inexpensive, I'd recommend the Olympus. I still have a 35mm Olympus that uses film, & that's a good camera too & the reason I bought the Olympus digital.

I took this pic of my daughter with it a few years ago. You can see a lot of color & detail, but I cropped it so it wasn't too big to post here.

I swear by Canon digital cameras. I absolutly love my Canon S3 IS. I did buy mine from E-Bay. I saved almost $300 compared to new at Best Buy.

My brother, who is a electronics Jedi Master loves Sony digital cameras.

Old Moparz is right on with his recommendation for a point & shoot relatively inexpensive camera. I also have newer Olympus that is water resistant and shock resistance. It came with a flexible rubber material like removable cover that protects it somewhat if dropped. If you want something with more professional type features the Nikon D80 can't be beat. I place this camera at the high end for amateur photographers and many pro's use it too.

here's my contribution

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,14524.30.html

it's an old thread

radio shack sells the new 7.1 meg version now,..

i got a one gig memory and that allows nearly 800 shots!

i'm working on the movie function now the camera allows
there should be a vid of my favorite stomping grounds along here shortly...

and i now use "photohands" for simple edits..

it's free unlike the Kodak site mentioned in the thread

i think you could do a search with the word camera or megapixal too..

--  "Digital zoom" isn't worth much.  DZ means it basically just crops-down the same picture that it would have taken from a distance.  But it's not giving you any more resolution over the farther-out picture that you would've had if you hadn't zoomed in.

--  An "Optical Zoom" is what you really want, which is zooming done with traditional moving lenses on the front of the camera.

--  Get at least 3-4 megapixils' worth of power for basic average camera usage, but the huge stuff (like 6 megapixils, etc.) isn't gonna worth the extra money for many people.

I agree with OM and Michael.  Olympus hands down.

You can get a 3-6 megapixel one fairly cheap nowadays.  I have a SLR that has too much fancy shlt so I use my old trusty C-4040ZOOM most of the time.  Both are Oly's.

I have the earlier S1IS Canon , it is very versitle , has 10X optical zoom , the S3 has 12x, it is light & takes non proprietory AA batterys which is handy if your batterys die , it was the best value for the $$ I could find at the time & is reasonable priced , Check Beach camera online , it also has optional wide angle & 2x zoom lenses & pivoting LCD display screen so as long as you can see the screen from vitually any angle you can take a great pic , it also has excellent night picture results

  "For the money"
the Casio Exlim zoom ex.. just walk into radio shack...
it's the size of a deck of cards!

The Casio EXILIM EX-Z60 is a stylish looking camera with a simple, clean design that should prove pocket-friendly thanks to gentle curves at the edges, and mostly smooth surfaces all round. The Casio Z60 fits a larger than average 2.5" LCD display with a resolution of 115,200 pixels into its compact body,
Images on the Casio EX-Z60 are captured with the combination of a 1/2.5" six megapixel CCD imager, and an Exilim-branded 3x optical zoom lens that provides a fairly standard 35mm-equivalent focal range of 38 - 114mm. Other features include 8.3MB of built-in storage memory, SD / MMC storage slot, NTSC / PAL video and USB 2.0 High Speed data connectivity (rather faster than the USB 2.0 Full-Speed / USB 1.1 connections still offered on some cameras), as well as a built-in flash and a macro mode that allows focusing as close as 10 centimeter. Power comed courtesy of a proprietary Lithium Ion rechargeable battery. The Casio EXILIM EX-Z60 goes on sale from mid April 2006,with a list price of $250. Two color variants will be available - black and silver.

Ive had nothing but good luck out of my Canon Powershot A510. I bought it about a year and a half ago and I think I paid about $200 for it. I'm sure you could get it now for $150 or so. It's 3.2 Megapix but its good enough for what I use it for. The only problem is that it eats battery's fairly quickly, so buying some rechargeables is highly recommended.

You can't go wrong with a Nikon Coolpix(personally 8000 series is where I would go).  8800 is a relatively new one.  We had the 8700 at the Reserve Center and it was unbelievable.

The Nikon Coolpix was told to me by a professional photographer years ago, and that's why I chose it for the Reserve Center when the Navy ponied up the cash to get a new one.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

I used to buy Konica Minolta, which are awesome.  They still make them, but they're branded as Sonys now.  I haven't bought one branded as a Sony and I don't know if they've changed.

We recently bought a canon powershot A620.  7 megapixel, easy to use.  although we got it with amex reward points, I looked around and it was about $230.00.   definately not compact, but in my opinion, if you need that compact, get a camera phone.

I had a smaller Sony S60...very easy to use.   I gave it to the 14 year old when I upgraded to my Sony DSC H5.    The 3 inch lcd screen is great for showing pics to people.  7 meg,  12x zoom.  blah blah.  A bit bulky but it's about the same as any other high end point and shoot.   Image stabilization is great for indoor shots.
I bought it off one of the ebay dealers in a package with a bunch of accessories.

I tried buying Lisa a Kodak Z710 off another ebay dealer in a package with a dock but their shipment was water damaged so I just cancelled the deal.

I found cnet.com has some good useful reviews.
