833 with aluminum housing, have some questions

are these mainly OD transmissions? or are some of these just regular 833's?  I found one and am willing to purchase it, but not sure on its origination.

PP 833 3549  I forgot to get casting numbers or part numbers.  That was found on the pass side of the housing.  Can anyone help?

sure its an aluminum case?   they were all OD transmissions...      manufacture date is 4/16/71

I am not sure what you mean by "all OD transmissions" because I believe the early ones 74 and below were 1:1 in 4th gear.... does the serial number denote a 71 model year transmission?

Don't know, that is one of those John Kunkel questions.   I "think" the vast majority, if not all, of the aluminum case ones were OD units.  Somewhere in the fuzzy section of my brain that I jokingly call a memory, it's saying something about race only units but if I'm right, those pieces are extremely rare.

An aluminum case with a '71 build date is a little odd, I would measure the diameter of the front bearing retainer, if it measures 5 1/8" it's an OD unit; any other diameter is just a regular 833.

i rechecked the numbers and they are what I stated earlier, so the confusion is still there.  here are some pics of the transmission:

the tailshaft housing is C-99359

the front housing is an OD, I put it in fourth and checked the revolutions

the serial number issue is still puzzling though.

i believe the A/FX cars had standard guts put into an aluminum case....     early 60s...         i believe i read that somewhere recently

the early 64-66 race 4 spds were alum case units with a steel countershaft bushing in the case , but these are very rare
that looks like the OD version with the large front brg retainer & you confirmed that with the revolutions

If the 3 in that 3549 build date was actually a lightly stamped 8 it would decode to 12-23-1984 which would be more correct for an OD 833.
