:icon_smile_question:  I am about to send my '66 charger (383 4 barrel 4 speed) out to paint.  It is completely dismantled and wears the original red metallic paint, except for the engine bay which was spray canned black by the previous owner.  Should I remove the fender tag, paint the engine bay, and reinstall, or leave it on the car and paint it? I'm sure one of you guys will know how to do it right!  Any help would be much appreciated!

Silver R/T

make sure you get paint under the tag

My Charger is hybrid, it runs on gas and on tears of ricers

1995 Ford Cobra SVT#2722

Just 6T9 CHGR

From the factory, one screw was removed, tag bent upwards, engine bay painted, second screw replaced & tag resecured.

One screw has body color (usually the one towards the front of the car) the other screw natural

If you have no vision or creative spirit, you can always fall back on the way the factory did it.

In my opinion, the '66 Charger tag was fastened at both ends and painted in the car. How plants handled the tag varied by plant. Some plants did it just like Chris described; some plants painted the tags flat on the car with both screws secured.

It appears screws were used at all plants to secure fender tags through 66. The Belvedere plant (C bodies) used rivets from 67 through 72 (I think...) with the exception of spring of 69 when you find them with screws.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

I've heard stories of where the body shop has taken the tag off of a car to paint and then misplaced it.

If it were me, I'd keep the tag at home and paint it later.
