I'm thinking about switching over to electronic ignition. Whats the best bang for the buck? I'm on a budget so money becomes a factor. One questions: Can I adjust my total timing digitally with electronic ignition? What have you guys used that you liked?

supserdave

You can adjust total timing digitaly with some of the high end units like the MSD distributor. We've always just used the electronic conversion kits from mancini, i think there 189 bucks.

Cheapest route is hit the wreckers & get the wire harness , order a rebuilt dist & buy a Chrome box

Are the chrome boxes good for street use?  I always thought they would burn out early or something, not like the orange boxes have a good rep for that matter.  would one of the 13.5V blue regulaters be OK for street use too?

Chrome boxes are great onthe street , the gold boxes will fail though
the blue VR will work on the street , not sure how long they will last thoguh

Rocky

Thanks, I was worried about spending twice as much when the orange boxes have such a high failure rate (from what I've heard).  I'm not so worried about the regulators, they seem to run in the same approximate price range.

Harlow

Sorry, but whats this chrome box?

if OEM is what you are after then what everybody is saying is the way to go, but check out www.designed2drive.com. best system for us guys on a budget.  :icon_smile_cool: good luck TK

supserdave

Hey Tk, how do you like the HEI setup? Seems like it would be nice and simple and cheap?

tkkruzer

you are right. this seems to be the way i will go. i've had problems out of the oem stuff in the past and I do not want it again. the HEI set up has never given me problems in any of my GM ventures so i'll probably go that way. I just like thing simple  :coolgleamA:  TK

Harlow

Sorry for being so dumb, but does the HEI allow me to ditch the points and rotor?
