Just wondering what that's all about. Performance package I assume what what's to it?

The 1965 model year saw the introduction of two important options; the 273 in³ (4.5 L) Commando, a 235 hp (175 kW) four-barrel carbureted V8, and the Formula 'S' package, a performance package that included the Commando V8, upgraded suspension, wheels, and tires, and a standard tachometer.

Did you write that? :D What about the 340? Wasn't that a Barracuda option in '68 or was it '69?

In 1968 the 318 in³ 2bbl engine was the smallest V8 available (replacing the 273 in³ 2bbl engine) and the 340 in³ 4bbl engine and finally the massive 440 in³ (7.2 L) RB single 4-barrel carbureted in 1969 became available straight off of the showroom floor. There was even a limited production of 50 Super-Stock, non-street legal, Hemi-powered Barracudas (and another 50 Dodge Darts) built in 1968 for use in drag racing. A handful of spinoff Savage GT's were also built, from the second generation Barracuda.

An aquitance had a 1969 'Cuda notchback that also had the Formula S package a decade ago.  What was interesting about the car is that it had the 383-4bbl., 4-speed combo (yes, it had the dual nonfunctioning hood scoops, hood stripes and the 'Cuda front side decals).  That car could burn tires like nobodies business.  It was decoded by GG as being one of 63 or so (less than 100 for sure, but I don't remember what options were used to obtain that figure).  It was blue (faded, mostly orginal paint with some bondo in the quarters) with black stripes and ended up in a little town twenty miles away after he traded it back to another mopar collector for a 1971 Dart Swinger (with a 318).  He traded the car away because someone laughed at it at a car show and he wanted a "better car for showing off".  I hear that it is being restored, but I have yet to hear when it will be done........

IM not sure if the cudas followed this , but in the dart line up it went like this  , first letter signifying line was L 2 letter was price class  l for low, m for medium, h for high and S for  SPECIAL, so if we were to assume, I would have to say its special...........kim........

Yes, on Cudas the S is for Special.

Maybe it doesn't stand for anything at all.  It could just be that some marketing guy sat around trying to think of something cool to call the performance version of the Barracuda and Formula S was what popped into his head?  Kind of like the story about the "X" in GTX.

What story :shruggy:

TUFCAT

I will agree with the majority that ("S" = special)  in this case.  Unlike the GTS and GSS, where ("S" = sport).  For background, over at GM ("SS" = super slow)  :icon_smile_wink:

The way I understand it, GTX basically means nothing other than it being a response to the name GTO. And I don't know if GTO means anything either.

1958300

GTO stands for grand turismo obligoto, a sports car racing class in the sixties that included ferrari and similar "streetable" race cars.

Ok, I always thought GTX stood for Gran Touring Express ?

I've always understood that GTX was just a catchy name they dreamed up.

Like 1958300 says "GTO" stands for Gran Turismo Omologato = Grand Touring Cat

now as far as GTX goes . . . .

GTO comes from a ripoff of a Ferarri model that was famous at the time.  The Ferarri GTO was a car created for the GT racing class in some European sanctioning body and the O for Omilgato meant it was to homologate the car.   Think Charger Daytona or Challenger TA.
As for GTX, the story goes that by the time Chrysler got into the letter movement, the other automakers already had a variety of them from SS to GS and GTA to GTO so a Plymouth marketing guy or division manager or something like that, sat down and started writing all the GT combos from A to Z.  He scarteched out the ones that were taken and then from what was left decided that GT"X" had the coolest ring to it.  Or sounded most boss or gear or groovy or whatever they said then.  Keen, nifty, swell?
