727, 904 trans. question

can some one show me the difference between the 727 and 904  small block tranny's maybe have some pics to go by? dont know what i've ot. thanx TK

There's a bulge outward on the 727 oil pan at the corner where the dipstick tube goes in.   The 904 has just a plain squared off corner.

The 727 is mainly used for the big block. For high horse applications generaly use the 727. If you don't have much over 300 the 904 will be fine. If going with a 727 make sure you have the small block bolt pattern. 727s are right around 35" in length.

can a 727 be bolted right in place of the 904 and use the same linkage, or does it require cutting a hole in the floor use a since (correct me if i'm wrong) the 727 is a floor shifted trans and the 904 is a column shifted trans?

the transmissions are interchangeable in all applications, different length driveshafts will be required based on the application.  in regards to a column or floor shift, that is based on what the car was initially setup to be (i.e. either column or floor shift).  727's and 904's can be either floor or column shift.  the 727 is not a dedicated floor shift transmission and vice versa with the 904.  different linkages are needed to convert a column shift to a floor shift.  A hole will need to be engineered to convert to a floor shift.
