When you shift from park...

On my 77 Caprice, when you shift from park to anything else, the red line stays on park. Does anyone have a clue as to how to get those two things coordinated again, or point me in a direction of help?

I'm not familiar with that particular car but most cars from that era have a cable that goes between the pointer and the shift tube in the column, the pointer is spring loaded to Park and when the cable breaks the pointer stays on Park.

If there is a jacket surrounding the column you might be able to get to the cable by removing it, if not the instrument panel will probably have to be removed.
