Have we forgiven Mel?

If I had any interest in the Mayans I might have seen this flick but when it comes to violence I guess I'd rather go with something like Aliens or Terminator. The guy might be a crazy, drunken, anti-Semitic fool but he knows entertainment.

Mel Resurrects: 'Apocalypto' Earns $14M
Sunday December 10 1:55 PM ET

Mel Gibson's bloody epic "Apocalypto" debuted as the No. 1 weekend movie, proving the filmmaker still can deliver a winner despite his drunken-driving arrest and anti-Semitic rant last summer.

"Apocalypto," a Disney release set in the Mayan civilization and told in an obscure Mayan language, opened with $14.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

It was a modest haul compared to the $83.8 million opening weekend of Gibson's last movie, the 2004 religious blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ," which went on to do $370 million domestically.

But "Apocalypto" overcame the baggage of Gibson's personal troubles as well as its difficult subject matter, which features a no-name cast in a hyper-violent tale that includes beheadings and images of hearts ripped from people's chests.

I never really cared in the first place..........just another loud mouth drunk going off on a vodka-powered rant.  But he does make some good movies. :D

I think most people separate the two.

I know that I think Alec Balwin is an idiot but he's made some damn good movies.

What's up with all the sub-titled flicks?!?  Just make a good ol fashioned shoot 'em up, with fast, naked women and even faster cars! :patriot:

14m is not a great opening . considering that jack ass 2 made 29m the first week . Rene

True, but I think the gist of the article is that #1 at the box office is a pretty good opening for a sub-titled Mayan epic made by an anti-Semitic drunk.

I actually thought that Apocalypto did extremely poor for a high budget Icon film. So either a huge lack of interest in the ancient Mayan civilization, or no Mel is not forgiven. But then Colin Farrell's New World did very poorly also - so maybe very old historical based films are not garnering any interest.
But I doubt you'll see Mel's face in any endorsements any time soon. While some can separate his films from him, a lot will not want to be reminded of him in any way for a while yet.

Well until the next celebrity pulls a public meltdown. The overall public memory is a short term item.

:iagree:

I never cared either. And I like Mel's acting. He was great in Air America, one of my favorite movies of all time and the Mad Max/Road Warrior movies.

That guy just about has a meltdown every time he opens his mouth. The only difference this time is that he did it on voicemail and Kim Basinger turned it over to the media. She's a screwball too.

Alec always struck me as totally off base. And it didn't take long for Kim to show her tilt either. What amazes me is an entire spin industry keeping the Baldwins, Bassingers, Cruises, Richards, Gibsons and the others on the straight and narrow appearance path for so long. Hats off for their successful work, but you're masking monsters.
Look at how long it took the real Cruise to appear after he fired his manager and put his sister/sister in law in place. The cracks appeared immediately. The coach jump not much longer. Think that the Fonz jump the shark can be augmented with the Cruise jump the coach as the benchmark for when stars go past the point of no return?

I never really put much into it, a drunken rant revealing his true thoughts....so?
I come from Jewish roots but couldn't care less if Mel likes me or my kind although I suspect that he hasn't changed his views, he can think what he wants, I pay my money to watch him act not listen to his politics.

I like his movies and have most of them except for the Passion of the Christ and the last on, Mad Max trilogy was great!
He's good at what he does and I'll continue to watch. I doubt though I'd sit down to dinner with the man though.

Never thought any of the Baldwins were all that great, very overrated in my book.

I thought movie was good. Pretty hardcore overall, not cheesy like every movie that comes out now.
