I Was hoping maybe someone else out there in mopar land could give me there thoughts on my ignition problem. I have a 72 Rallye 400 that died on me the other day driving down the street. It started right back up,,,,drove another block,,,,died again. Started up ,, drove home. I replaced the  entire distributor with new pickup coil (gapped at .012). New ballast resistor, new MSD blaster coil, new plug wires, Had the Orange ECU box tested, made sure it was grounded good to the firewall. I thought all this would have eliminated the problem,,,,,but It did it again a few days later,,,,same deal,,,,started right back up, and hasn't died yet,,,,,I did replace the orange box with another good stock ecu unit but I am not convinced the problem went away.  Could the problem be in the ignition switch itself ???  or  is anywhere else to start looking ???  I replaced the engine wiring harness in the mid 90's but could it be a corrosion problem ??   Also,   do you guys think it is necessary to run an extra ballast resistor with the Blaster coil or will the stock electronic ignition handle it ??  Any Ideas ???

Ghoste

It'll handle it.  It could have been that orange ecu failing after it was hot?

Thanks for the reply Ghoste !! ,,, The orange box is about 12 yrs old ,,, The stock one I put on has only about 5 months use. When the car dies it has not been driven very far,,,less than a few minutes and at about 20 - 30 m p h.  It has not done it out on the highway after warmed up ,,, at least not yet anyway.

Ghoste

Not necessarily the car warmed up, but rather the box.  They can get hot pretty quickly and begin to do strange things.  I'm only guessing though.

Thanks Ghoste,,  I am gonna gamble and try a cross state trip in it this weekend,,,, I will let you know if she makes it or not ,,,, Hope the ecu replacement  fixed it but I'm still not convinced just yet !!!

Ghoste

I had a couple that would fail that way so that's the only reeason I'm stabbing in the dark with it.  Anyway, ggod luck and I hope your trip goes well.  Remember, if you take care of your Charger, your Charger will take care of you.

SUPERBEE123

are you checking the spark when it dies to make sure it is a ignition problem ? could it be a fuel related problem water or trash in the fuel system, dry rot rubber fuel lines?

72_rallye

Update ghoste and superbee,,,,, trip went ok,,drove over 700 miles with no failures,,hopefully the ecu change fixed it,,,only other problem i am having is carbon fouling the plugs after about 2000 miles. everything is new and it still seems to be doing it on every plug. Tan sooty carbon buildup,,,I have tried the gap at .035  and .050 and same problem,,,maybe a hotter plug?,,,running NGK's ,,,can't remember the heat range though....thanks for all your ideas !!!!!

lean out the carb to keep the plugs clean , check the firewall plug connections as well that can cause the car to shut down , Di-electric grease is a good idea in the firewall plug
