All of them have features the others dont. 71 had the best marker lights, 72 has the best door depressions, << Hideaways, 73-74 best handling and nicer design fenders.

So what I did was a 73 rallyee 440 4 speed power everything with 71 flush marker lights, 72 hideaways. I would have put in the door depressions if I could have found any.

71-72...        I used to hate third gens - but i've grown to like them a lot...     If I didnt' already have my 69 Road Runner project I would be hunting for a 71-72 Charger or Road Runner....

I vote for 71-72 for many reasons...      HP engines, high impact colors, better (IMO) lines than the 73-74. The biggest single reason though is the 73-74 use that funky mushy suspension...     I much like the 71-72 rigid mounted K member and differential for their simplicity and better overall handling. I know the 73-74s can be modified to get rid of the rubber but that is the deciding factor for me.

Small quirk of mine is I HATE the windows on the SE, along with any opera windows...    the only windows I seem to like are the standard 1/4 windows...

I'm not sure which is BETTER, they are both Mopars.   I like them all. But, I do like my 73 SE best. I never was a real fan of the C pillar treatment of the 71/72, the upswept  DLO on the rear quarter glass ( sorta Gremlin like) wasn't my favorite. I am partial to the "opera" glass treatment of my SE, unique and distinctive. Yes, I don't mind the hood emblem, either and I AM NOT LIMP WRISTED. ( I wish that those who insist on dissing others with that nonsense would keep that stuff to themselves.) I love the tail lite treatment of the 73/74 but, I wish that the 73 had the hidden headlights like the 71/72.

Ya know, the 68 is a great year car, no question, but to me, my 73 is every bit a Charger as any out there. The 73 SE was a car right for the times, Chrysler sold a lot of them. My 400 4bbl is a strong motor, if I had the desire I could easily put as much muscle into it as any 2nd gen.

68 is my favorite ... but if i had to choose life or death I'd take 71-72. It almost seems as if someone should take all the best features from over the years and put it in /on one car that way no one can argue over whats better when the best has been made. :2thumbs:
your RPMs are rising high then my grandpas pants!!!!!

Since I last posted on this thread 4 years ago, I have owned both. I prefer the 73/74 for several reasons. Better ride and handling, and IMO a better looking roof line/ back window. What the 71/72 have in there favor are hideaway headlights, just cant beat those! And, more powerfull engines if you are staying stock. If you are in to cruise nights, car shows and competition like that most times 1972 is the cut off for muscle cars, but not always.

What is better?

One person's opinion, or another person's opinion?

Muscle cars ended in 71.......72 are ok, I would never own anything 73 up...they were not muscle cars and were more comfort then anything else, softer suspension, opera windows  :eek2: bumpers that were hideous and bodylines that were more suited for my dad to buy ...or maybe grandpa
more then 50% of the 73 up guys are looking for 71/72 bumper mounts and looking to modify the side marker lights......
to reach the Ultimate the 71  :yesnod:  :smilielol: :smilielol:

And, the 73/74 owners all want to add 71-72 Louvered doors,Hide-away headlights and the louvered taillights ect, ect, ect.

FLG

I like the opera windows and vinyl top on my 73 as i feel breaks up that huge quarter panel nicely instead of it seemingly look like it goes on forever...kinda looks weird at certain angles because you can no longer make out the side body line

That being said im creating my own "i wish they came like this"

73 Charger
71 R/T tail lights and front hideaways (also removing the filler that was added)
Shaved side markers
71 R/T door skin louvers grafted on 73 doors
R/T Hood

Leaving the vinyl and opera windows.

'71-'72
Cleaner looking, better/more rigid chassis, better engine, better doors/hoods/headlights/tailights.

'71 is the last year before the malaise era set in...and by '73, the malaise had infected Mopar.

Only a 73/74 owner would say this....Because they could not afford a 71/72.  :nana:
