Another Killing.

Troy

As far as I know, neither of the colleges I attended had any sort of PA system or bells between classes. I suppose they could have set off the fire alarm but that would have only affected one building and would have caused hysteria. I wouldn't think that the police would have locked down an entire campus after the first shooting as I'm sure they weren't expecting a second one two hours later (they would have been looking but not willing to create a panic situation). This is certainly NOT a common occurrence and I'm fairly positive there were no defined procedures on how to handle the situation. Looking at the campus, the second building was 1/2 mile away from the first and separated by some sort of practice field which is also typical of colleges campuses I've been to. To make things even more confusing as far as communication goes, each "college" in a typical university has its own faculty, administration, and buildings. I am not sure if there's a central location for disseminating information or if it has to work its way down the chain (starting with local and campus police who need to contact the right people in the first place). Aside from the police cruising the grounds on their bullhorns with guns drawn there isn't an easy way to distribute a lot of complicated information to an entire campus in a very short time.

It's sad to see something like this knowing that many of the people involved probably had no idea why they were in that situation. If they survive they'll be asking "what if" questions their entire life and if they are one of the ones murdered their family will have a hard time finding peace. I don't want to make any guesses about the person responsible.

Troy makes a good point on the logistics, and I agree with him especially given the isolated buildings and facilities (its a very large complex). However, this is where I disagree.  In this day and age of terrorism - no chances should be taken. Authorities should always make the assumption "theres more to come" until the point where it has been determined that the threat is over. In the case of 9/11 - - I'm sure nobody expected, the second plane, third plane into the Pentagon,  or even the fourth plane on its way to DC that went down in before it got there.  The school protocol (at least K-12) is a complete lockdown of all schools within the district whenever a violent situation of this nature has occured.  Despite the panic that will surely happen.

My GUESS is that the bastard that did the shooting had more than a few screws loose. Why don't they just take themselves out and let others live?? What can killing a bunch of innocents possibly do for them??

The logistics involved with good communication on a 2,600-acre campus might be difficult but far from impossible in this day and age. Sure it's hindsight to say the incident could have been handled better by the school officials but if the shoe fits...

One email 2-hours after the first shooting is deplorable security/communication to say the least.

Especially since the gunman from the first shooting was still at large.

Insanity is not specific to any race or religion, and you typically find it in all of them...    My heart goes out to all of the families who will never be the same because of this tragedy.

And here I had him pegged for another crazy white boy.   (I can say that because I'm white...)

As it has been said, I don't understand what makes a psycho like that tick, but I also don't understand this kneejerk reaction to blame everyone but the killer.  Too many people are more than willing to point fingers at the cops, the school, the gov't, or whoever, as if they should be psychic and expect that the worst shooting in U.S. history was going to take place this morning.   :eyes:

I'm sure that from the perspective of the cops, the first shooting looked like another domestic shooting (albeit in a dorm residence) and not the start of some sort of rampage.  It would be ridiculous to expect cops to lock down an entire campus and tell 25,000ish people stop everything and hide because someone got shot somewhere.  I don't see anything deplorable about handling a shooting like a shooting.  Once they knew it was a rampage (2 hours later) they tried to spread the word, but as Troy mentioned, there's a difference between announcing something over a PA to a few hundred kids in a high school and getting a message to 20 or 30thousand people across an entire city.  Shit happens.  Quit looking to blame 'the man.'

I agree with this.  Unfortunately "Monday morning quarterbacking" is what is wrong with how people deal with things like this.

I feel sorry for the victims and their families first of all.
Secondly, I guess it is just human nature to try to find a reason to point fingers and find a scapegoat to blame for any tragedy especially when the gunman isn't alive to answer for his crimes.
I believe society is partially to blame for all these shootings. As a whole, we have become a society of large amounts of mental pressure, instant gradification, and selfishness. Scenarios of this sort I feel, will be seen more in the future unfortunately.   :icon_smile_dissapprove:

I once had a post deleted from a thread over there about 5 - 10 minutes after I posted it.  No foul language, just pointing out a guy with a line something like "pot meet kettle".   ::)

Red72Chrgr ...let me explain.  Unless the police had definitive evidence that the shooter had left campus, a sweep could have been done to secure the area. Then again, ...who knows....in an area that big he could have left Campus and shot up a diner or book store.  You just never know.

No, I guess unless your post is a half assed "OH what a horrible tragedy...my prayers are with everyone", you'll get zapped.

Like I said before...ah, never mind.

Ok, well, pertaining to Strat's copycat thought...I think that with each one of these types of situations that get plastered all over the news for weeks/months, it just feeds these whacko's the type of sick fix they need. All they can think of is "oooh, I can be really famous too". Those two Columbine losers were all about that...they wanted to be famous.
Of course this type of story needs to be told, but not to the degree of continual rehashing that the media likes to do.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)
