Leonard Cohen - Suzanne Lyrics

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

I love that song and Cohen -- it means so much to me.  And I like the difference from the solo Collins lyrics.  I know everyone knows he is Jewish but I have never heard a Christian write such great lyrics (maybe this was in his exploratory days).  Lonely wooden tower, c'mon, that's great.  I am sorry that I read it this afternoon while I am in the middle of yard work -- makes me stop and pause (and slow down).  The other verse I love is salvation army counters, the counter?  It just hits it nail on, incredible.  Thanks for the posting.  And check some of his other songs -- like the one about Janis Joplin, Chelsie Hotel I think or off that album.  Kim

There was a show that interviewed the Suzanne that Cohen wrote about just last year. She now lives a gypsy style life driving around Montreal in a camper and lives out of parking lots. The crew managed to get into the apartment in which Cohen had the tea and lemons with Suzanne and the song came to him.

In my personal opinion he was a better song writer than singer. I love his song Halleluja. Though I think it comes most to its right when performed by Jeff Buckley. And yes I know the lyrics of the Jeff Buckley version are somewhat different but I believe it is so much more powerfull.

I need to check out Buckley -- thanks for the recommendation.  If someone is not familiar with Cohen, do give him a listen if you have a chance or a mind to.  Kim

Cohen's a way better songwriter than he is a singer.  That being said, I think his magnum opus is still "Hallelujah."

If you want something to send chills up your spine, listen to KD Lang perform Hallelujah.
I ain't got time for pain, the only pain I got time for is the pain i put on fools how don't know what time it is.
