Dumb question about 3rd member lube

I changed out my center section and began putting in new lube by putting it in before bolting up the center section. I know I'm low but it's a pain to try to pump or pour the lube into the little hole. I have my axles out right now, can't I just pour the required amount in down one of the axle tubes?
It would be much easier!
