The only reason that this story has any legs left to it at all is that the Anna Nicole paternity party is over. This trivial incidents are getting way too much press. Guess the world is in good shape if a kid's parentage and a spaceshot's comments are good for weeks of front page news.

And of course ratings, which boils down to money, is the only driving force.

I agree and so does the columnist Linda Chavez:

"I am sick to death of Don Imus, and I'm tired of hearing his disgusting rant against the Rutgers women's basketball team. I don't care who fathered the daughter of trampy Anna Nicole Smith, nor was I interested in what killed the blowsy blonde or where she would be buried. I don't need to know that the nutty astronaut who drove cross-country to confront her lover's other girlfriend wore diapers to cut down on her pit stops... Don't get me wrong. For those people who want to know who's sleeping—or feuding—with whom in Hollywood, or have an endless appetite for the macabre or just plain weird, there are plenty of resources available to get their fix, from the relatively respectable People magazine to the myriad pulp tabloids at the checkout stand, not to mention shows like 'Access Hollywood' or cable channels like E! and Fox Reality. But why must network news shows and serious newspapers, not to mention cable news stations, cover these insignificant stories ad nauseam?... We are becoming a nation of nincompoops... We live in a dangerous and complicated world in which we're asked to make difficult decisions with too little information. The news media have always played an important role in getting us the facts to inform those choices. But they are quickly abdicating that role in lieu of entertaining us. It almost makes me hanker for the 15-minute news broadcasts of my youth. At least Chet Huntley and David Brinkley could be counted on to report real news and leave the entertainment to Ed Sullivan and Sid Caesar." —Linda Chavez

This fits better here than in the post about the killings in Virginia because it has to do with reporting. I was at lunch watching the CNN broadcast of the "breaking news" at the college. The ticker at the bottom was showing snippets about the Attorney General, President Bush's speech later on in the day, Congress' moment of silence, Darfur, and other relatively big news stories that they obviously couldn't break away for. Then, just once, I saw something along the lines of "Vienna: Highway closed after truck carrying rabbits overturns releasing 5,000 of the animals". It's the only thing that really caught my attention since everything else was so repetitive and because it seemed so out of place amidst the politics and tragedy. I almost wanted to see video though. That scares me.

If Imus was a black rapper with his hair tied up coolio style and said what he said in a song he would still be on the air and no one would care not Sharpton not Jackson no one would give a crap.

Because that kind of cRAP gets played on thousands of radio stations across this country every day with lyrics worse than what Imus said. I think snoop dogg said it if the words came from a rapper instead of a 60 year old creepy white guy no one would care.

Imus was sacrificed on the alter of political correctness.

I have a personal story about Al Sharptounge, about 10 years ago the local high school had a major scandal take place, it seems a 16 year old girl was found "servicing" about 9 boys during school in a stairwell where the cameras could not see. The boys were lined up and waiting their turn. Well the school caught wind and found out and expelled all of them. Girls and boys. Well as you can guess the girl was white and the boys black about a week after they got tossed who shows up at and holds a press conference in front of the high school? Good ole Al I remember his comment about this. The school was racists because all the boys who partook were black, he said surely there was at least one WHITE BOY who was involved and why they did not expel him? Well after a little investigation it turns out yep all the boys were black and the girl was white. Reverend AL skulked away without another word and crawled back under whatever rock he came from in Harlem.

There are 'white' channels too. What do you think CMT is? There were also TNN and OLN - though theyre both gone. And that's ok...people will naturally flock to whatever holds their interests...be it bullriding or rap videos, its not necessarily about race. In any case, a huge chunk of BET's audience are white kids from Idaho trying to live out their gangsta' fantasies.

There is no need for a "white history month" because every month is white history month - president's day in February, St. Patricks's in March, whatever holiday it is they were celebrating in D.C. yesterday, 4th of July, and so on...and that's ok too. It's our country's history.

And things like the UNCF are derived from a era in our country when, unfortunately, a black kid really didn't have a fair shot to go to a good college for a variety of reasons and an such organizations were necessary. To some extent they still are, though the name might be outdated.

Speaking of the VT shootings...Imus has to be feeling relieved.

"Ragheads" doesn't bother me, some of these "Ragheads" are vile sub-human animals who enjoy killing innocent woman and children everyday. They proved it on 9-11. They want to kill for Allah so they can go to hell and rape their 72 virgins. Actually "Raghead" is quite mild compared to the term I prefer..."Camel Sodomizer" :patriot:

And a black person would say that they don't necessarily watch BET either, that it's not so much for black people as much as hip-hop / r&b / urban culture - black, white, brown-, and that most of the people you see there are black, but that's just how it is in hip hop. I think really, regardless if the words Imus used were right or wrong. Freedom of speech is going the way of the dodo bird, I dont know why those two idiots ( Jackson, Sharpton) took any offense to it, I dont see them trying to change the way those  rap "artists"  express themselves in their music.

What most are saying here is that it is called the BLACK intertainment channel. It could have been called hip hop or R&B channel but it isn't. Charlie Pride was a black country singer. And for the UNCF it IS for blacks only....well maybe if your mixed you could get something. Believe me if ya can play ball youse be gettin a scola ship.

Is there any Anglo - Americans on BET? I don't watch CMT but I bet there are African - Americans on it. And affirmative action is no longer needed but when the politicians tried to dissolve it there was a large uproar from the African - American community. Right now we have a major case of reverse racism going on , starting with our own government.

As a matter of fact, you do see 'caucasians' on BET.

My comment about the UNCF being necessary wasn't about affirmative action, it was a bout opportunity and financial issues. Is it just for blacks? I don't know - my guess is that people of other races just don't bother to apply. I do doubt that the Irish-American scholarship fund helps out a lot of Asians, mexicans, and Blacks either.

You know, the only thing more pathetic than minorities who always blame their problems on "racism" are white people who are always whining about reverse racism.

Whenever there is some of sort of racial controversy and the initial furor dies down a bit, we're start to hear about how white folks also have it bad. They always bring up the same things too - inncuous things at that - to prove their point, like BET, UNCF, NAACP, etc and how it is a great social injustice that there can't be equivalent white counterparts. Like any of these groups are part of some conspiracy to undermine the American way of life. They way I hear some of you guys complain about these things, you'd think that 50 Cent and Kweisi Mfume are personally kicking down your door and calling you a cracker while their friends burn a "Black Power" sign onto your lawn.

Whenever a person of color brings up slavery or other past social injustice, the most common answer is "get over it, it's in the past and it doesn't affect you". So fellas'...if BET is the biggest institutional adversity you've had to face in your life...then you have it pretty good. GET OVER IT!

First, racism is never civilized and second I guess it depends on what you define as being civilized.
No blood shed, yes then it's civilized but something to be proud of here? I don't think so. Something actually being accomplished besides stirring racial hate. Nope.

I just can't get over how much blatant racism is in here.
At least it has stayed some what civilized, wouldn't you agree?

First, racism is never civilized and second I guess it depends on what you define as being civilized.
No blood shed, yes then it's civilized but something to be proud of here? I don't think so. Something actually being accomplished besides stirring racial hate. Nope.  :scratchchin:

You're right, and I would have to agree with you on most of your statement. Then again, this whole thread was started on the basis of freedom of speech I suppose..However maybe not a place for it on this particular platform :scratchchin:
Earth. Even the word sounded strange to me now... unfamiliar. How long had I been gone? How long had I been back? Did it matter? I tried to find the rhythm of the world where I used to live. I followed the current. I was silent, attentive, I made a conscious effort to smile, nod, stand, and perform the millions of gestures that constitute life on earth. I studied these gestures until they became reflexes again. But I was haunted by the idea that I remembered her wrong -Solaris
