Why do you guys wish your women were into cars?

I see this comment here a lot and lately it's got me wondering why it is some of you say it. What is it you'd like to get out of the relationship by having her in the garage with you or seeing her thumb through a Mopar Action magazine on her own or actually ask YOU if you want to go to the car show with her? In my case I'm just happy she's neutral on the subject and isn't giving me a hard time about all the money and time it requires to restore a Charger. I don't know that I'd feel more special or validated if she were more active in my hobby. What do you think?

And here's a good question: Would you be willing make a deal with her that if she showed more interest in your Charger you'd go shopping at the mall with her or take ballroom dancing lessons with her or take part in some other equally emasculating activity?

there's pro's and con's

pro's
she will appreciate what kind of car you own (Charger, etc) It won't be "just a car" for her

con's
she might know more than you about cars, that would suck :)

Pro's:  less complaining about the amount of "charger money" being spent

Con's:  more likely to post  pictures of herself on my favorite charger board and having me be all shocked that a bunch of guys took it too far...

I personally have always gotten along better with women that were "Tom boyish". That said, The fact that my girlfriend likes cars is cool cause we can work on them together cause she likes getting dirty too. So, I always have a helper. That, and there won't be no arguments when it comes time for me to get another one because she knows that old cars are money in the pocket long as you take care of them. Plus when were done working on the car, I can take her for a drive  :D

I think you hit the nail on this one. I think a lot of women who are into cars would have to be somewhat "tom boyish". Not afraid of getting dirty, or breaking a fingernail...LOL. Either that or just have enough respect for the hobby their men are in. I don't think you can talk your way of getting your G/F or wife into liking the hobby, they have to have the interest. Maybe what the biggest influence is, if the guys don't critisize their wives hobbies, they won't critisize yours. And like silver R/T had said, you may be surprised to find the G/F or wife getting more into the hobby than yourself.  :icon_smile_wink:

This is a hobby that my wife and I can enjoy together.   It works out quite well.   I do the mechanical work, and she loves to keep the old cars polished and waxed so they really turn heads.   She knows that they don't depreciate like new cars, and she doesn't complain when I spend money to upgrade them.  For the last several years she has had her old car and I have mine.    It works for us.....

Orange_Crush

My wife is not into my cars.  She is an interior designer so she can't understand my love of cars and I can't understand how she can differentiate between two different shades of brown which, to me, look EXACTLY the same (but hey, she gets paid A LOT of money for her knowledge, so I ain't complaining).

In any case, she really wants nothing to do with the car, but she...

-Lets me spend however much I want on it.
-Is not jealous in the least so I can be friends with other women and she doesn't care.
-Understands my need to get the hell away from her occasionally.

I think I'll keep her.
I ain't got time for pain, the only pain I got time for is the pain i put on fools how don't know what time it is.

my wife couldn't care less about my Charger, and actually I like it that way. It gives me something to do that I can just get lost in by myself.

Curtis,

My ex G/F actually was in to cars and new enough to get by knowledge wise but never turned a wrench.  I tried to teach her the basics and she really didn't seem interested in getting dirty, which was fine by me.  Her father is a mechanical/body repair genius and that's how she gained the knowledge over the years.  So, she did enjoy my hobby but only to a certain extent.  She would definitely have issues because I was always buying cars/parts, and boats or whatever and that did upset her.
To answer the question on if it made me feel more validated, the answer was yes, the main reason being that we had something in common, but not enough due to the fact, she is 11+ years younger than I am and I was crazy to think a young beautiful woman would want to settle down at that age.(I'm 40 now and she is 29, and we met when she had just turned 22). All too many relationships have no common ground and end up terminating from that fact alone.   When her and I got back together for a short period of time over 2 years ago, I was determined to make more of an effort to find something she really enjoyed and do that with her.  She really loves Silver jewelry and stones so we decided to have that hobby together and I went all out and spent the cash to get the kiln and tons of stones.  That in itself didn't turn out to be the answer either as we still couldn't be together because it turned out to be her telling me I always had to be better than her.  That wasn't the case, it's just I don't like to do stuff half when I know with practice I will do better.  She turned it into a competition for some reason.  We are still great friends and I love her and she loves me.  We talk a couple times a month and she always calls me when her car breaks or she needs advice or something.

To answer the other question on the mall and stuff, if I thought at the time it would have helped us out, I would have been willing to try it to find common ground and make her happy and keep the relationship going.  A little sacrifice can go a long way.  Not always though as I'm single and will remain that way.

I've always said, any man can be with any woman for a short period of time.  It's when the fairy dust falls and you really get to know the other person, you try to see if there is anything left to talk about.  In most cases, that isn't the case though.

OK, those are my thoughts on this even though I went off subject a tad, but if nothing else it was quick therapy for me. Hee hee..

Here's some pics of the jewelry to cooberate that story cause I still occcasionally make it. I give most of it away cause I cant really seem to market it.  I think she was just mad cause I was better than she was.lol  J/K

I have no problem that way either. My girlfriend doesn't care. But then again, she enjoys looking at women as much as I do.

Any of the last girlfriends I have been with have had this problem. I have a fair amount of female friends, none of them I have ever touched in a way and haven't even considered that. That's what the other girlfriends are for. But they don't trust it, they think since I talk to them about all sorts of stuff and other things that they are only trying to get me into bed or something. I have 7 very good female friends, all know me quiet a bit and I have never kept them a secret for the girlfriends. But sooner or later it would always come up. And wouldn't it be with my girlfriend it would be with the boyfriend of one of my good friends. I recently lost one like that. Sadly enough people can't seem to understand that friendship between two sexes is possible without the physical part. It frustrates me, each and every one of them thought those good friends or at least one of them was trying to get me into bed. I have known all them for quite some time now and I have never came to that conclusion... So maybe you are lucky, I can't seem to find one...

GTX

Mine was sort of into Mopars before I met here although her boyfriend at the time had a Camaro.
Her dad was into Mopar and used to race an alky injected hemi in a 19' flat bottom boat and almost bought a new 68 hemi Barracuda back in the day. It was his father in laws Mopar dealership and they quibbled over $500.00 and he walked !!!
When she got her license she drove a black '73 Charger SE with a 440 that never lost a race and was built, upholstered and painted by him in his speed /boat building/ auto customizing shop . For a while we considered building a strip car and she would drive. She loves to race and likes it when she beats beat men. I used to take crap for sitting next to her while she drove and we raced but I'd just smile as she cleaned the other guys clock. She was really fast off the line. Even as recently as 2 years ago we've thought of that.

Anyway, she has for the most part supported me in my spending money and time as well as loading up the driveway and house at time with car parts. It was her idea to buy another Charger since I won't let her drive the GTX, She's never driven a blown car before and although she is an excellent driver I'm afraid of her lead foot. She actually wanted a Cuda but we know how much they cost so we got the Charger.
She used to turn wrenches more than she does now but now she's more of a girly girl these days although she likes to go to car shows and loves the races.
Now she's getting into Nascar a bit and all of this is something that we can do together. She doesn't have quite as much interest as she used to in building cars now but she still supports my interest. How many women would allow a blower to sit on the dining room table for a month or let me spend the money to buy it?

Once when we were cruising around there was a guy in a first gen GTO convert next to us. We pulled up to a light and the next thing I know she is comparing notes with the guy on his cam specs and why he chose the cam that he did and whether it was the best choice for his use.

Ahh, that's my gal!

Vainglory, Esq.

I like my girls girly.  I do enjoy it when they feign interest on occasion, though.  Makes me feel less guilty talking about the car, of which they understand just about nothing.

chargerboy69

My wife could not tell the difference between a Chevelle and a Cuda, and that doesn't bother me at all. What matters is, she does love the Charger.

Last year I had a couple offers for it that were more than generous, and she was the one that put her foot down and said it was not for sale. And she goes to car shows with me, and she even spends 4 days at Mopar Nationals with me. Every summer we help with a local Mopar show, and every year she works the show with me. That is great.

Ooooo! Lesbians.   :o

I have a pic, but..... :D

I don't mind that my wife isn't into cars as much as I am, but if she was, that would be cool too. If she had the same level of interest as I do, I know she'd have a much nicer car that was finished though. She knows more than the average person does, but that goes way back to her dad being a mechanic. She likes certain cars more than others & can recognize a lot of them, but sometimes can't remember what I have in the garage if someone asks her. It took her about 15 years to actually remember what date my birthday falls on & has to ask me how long we have been married if the topic comes up.  ::)

She's changed her own flat tires, rotated them in the driveway, changed the oil, has had cars with manual chokes & transmissions, & basically knows what she is looking at under the hood on mostly older cars. She's also gone with me to drag home cars & parts as far as Indiana, has been to the 3 Mopar Nationals with me that I've been to, & hasn't hassled me on all my junk. It's not one of her passions to be into cars, but she respects my interest in them, just like I respect her interest in her music. She's into being a bluegrass musician & singer, & has her instruments she collects.

Actually, those type are called "Bull Dykes" Not a joke either as a lesbian told me that and so has my girlfriend. There are a lot of lesbians that don't like "Bull Dykes" either. Well to answer the original question of why do guys want their wife to like cars the answer is simple...to have things in common! The more you have in common the more satisfying the relationship will be (as Mike alluded to above.) My wife is my best friend, and she loves Chargers. She doesn't like to work on them but likes to drive them and go to shows. She also asks lots of questions and has a real interest in the MOPARS, we have lots of fun together with it.

I asked what she'd like to do for vacation when I get home from Korea, go to Jamaica for a week or go to Carlise for the show, she picked Carlisle...is that the ultimate woman or what!!!

71_deputy

my wife is into the muscle car years- heck, met her when she had her 73 Cuda!!!  here brothers had 440 70 Runners- so mopar rubbed off onto me!!!

But tried her to get to help me in restoring the Deputy( her car! ) and "no way am I gonna crawl under that thing!!!" lol

so she lets/helps me in my love of mopars as long as she dosn't get dirty!!!! shows, parts meets etc!

same as above- no interest in KNOWING about cars- just drive the snot outta them!!!!
