I've been trying to determine if my engine is original to my car. I've been crawling around underneath and I'm not sure if I'm looking in the correct spot.  Anyway, I'm hoping someone can decode the numbers that I have found. My car is a '69 and the following numbers are cast on the block:

              2  9        24680  8
                             LL

I found the following number on the driver side of the block on a pad that butts up to the tranny:

                          PT383 H24130551

I was under the impression that the match to the vin was on the passenger side along the oil pan rail. Unless I'm looking in the wrong spot, I'm unable to find a number in that location. Also, where do I look for a number on the tranny? Thanks in advance for any help.

PT383 H24130551

PT= Plant Trenton (built at the Trenton, MI engine plant)
383= Displacement
2413= The build date March 6, 1968
0551= The 551st built that day.

This is a '68 engine, the partial VIN will be stamped in the top of the block where it mates to the transmission, the transmission will be stamped right next to it.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks, John. I'll see if I can locate the tranny number.

Well, I found the number on top of the block. 8G 209613. It does not match my vin. Maybe it matches another member's car. There was no number at all on the tranny. Looks like that is a replacement, too. Oh well. :'(

If the trans is a '69 or newer it will have the partial VIN stamped on a raised pad on the passenger side of the bellhousing, no raised pad means it's '67 or earlier. Look for the part number stamped in the pan rail on the drivers side.
