MR.MIKE

hey guys,
i'm busy putting back all the wiring mess on my 68 charger 440
i'm down to the alternator- sounds easy so far , right ?
the alternator battery side has a fat 14 gauge wire that is just hanging
where do i connect it to ?? keep in mind car has electric fuel pump,.electronic ignition
if i connect a regular wire from alternator back into wiring harness will it work without draining battery or alternator ??
i would like to keep dash cluster ammeter working as well
what do you suggest ??
thanks....mike

Is the "fat" 14 guage wire in addition to the black 12 or 10 guage wire that is attached to the threaded battery terminal on the alternator? If so, connecting it to the battery terminal will make that wire hot all the time.

Whether or not it drains the battery will depend on whether  the load it's hooked to is switched or not.

If you want to keep  the ammeter, be sure the terminals are clean (at the meter and the bulkhead connector) and the nuts on the meter are tight.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

THE BLACK WIRE IS CUT ALONG WITH THE BLUE WIRE
I KNOW THE BLACK IS THE POSITIVE TO THE ALT.
I BELIEVE THE BLUE WIRE IS IGNITION(NOW ELECTRONIC)
THE GREEN WIRE IS HOOKED UP TO ALTERNATOR AS WELL

black is + 12 volts from alt to the battery via the bulkhead connections and amp meter- only rated for around 35 amps for the spade connectors. If you are drawing current for the high demand stuff- suggest increasing the wire size, don't use the existing bulkhead connections for power- use a rubber grommet thru the firewall for the new wire from the alt to the amp meter, then from the amp meter with the same size wire thru the grommet to the starter power stud- protected by a fusable link like the factory did to the battery.

green wire for the alt to the electronic voltage reg which is the neg control for the field winding and the dark blue wire is ing. switched 12 + volts that also provides power to the ing.system- this is for a dual alt system.

JOHN MAC.......THANKS FOR THE HELP !!!
I HAVE ONE RED WIRE ALREADY AT THE AMMETER.
SO I SHOULD CONNECT ANOTHER WIRE FROM ALTERNATOR TO AMMETER
AND ONE WIRE FROM AMMETER TO STARTER POSITIVE STUD- I WILL HAVE A TOTAL OF 3 WIRES ON  AMMETER
THANKS...MIKE

from the factory there should only be two wires on the amp meter( except if there is a extra acc. wire- but it would be a smaller wire)

black one to the bulkhead to the alt and red to the bulkhead to the starter relay power post.

I HAVE ONE RED WIRE ALREADY AT THE AMMETER.? maybe a original wire???  remember- in the harness are power takeoff points to feed other things- like headlights, bat terminal on the fuse block, power feed to the ing. switch.

check and follow all the points of the main power wires in the attachments.
