Please school me on properly installing a temp gauge on my trans. as I'm not familiar with them at all.  Am getting ready to install my transmission and would like to know what's going on in there.
Thanks in advance!

I would say add a cooler and dont worry with a gauge unless you are towing or road racing.

If ya just gotta have it, you should be able to buy a bung for the gauge sensor and weld it into the trans pan. Summit or Autometer carries them.

Temperature sender location depends on what you want to know.

If you want to know the maximum temperature the fluid reaches, install the sender in the front cooler line near the outlet in the case. If you want to know the general operating temperature of the fluid, install it in the pan.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
