I'm going to buy a Charger, but the owner can't find the keys.  I will be taking the ignition switch out to have a key made.  Also, is it hard to get the ignition switch off?  Any special tools?  Barring any changes made in the past to the key locks on the doors, would the ignition key also open the doors?

Even if the owner provides me with the title, should I also get a bill of sale?  And what exactly is a bill of sale?  Is it something that a notary drafts or can it be on plain paper done by the owner or myself?

Thanks in advance!!
Fernando

the ignition rotates out ez...
there are three different keys one for the ignition one for the doors and one for the trunk
not to mention on for the console and glove box and possibly another for the gas cap, well fill ya' in later on these others..

bill of sale can be done by the owner should be signed with the Odomitor and sale price, some folks... ahem,..
fudge abit on the amount so the taxes will be lower..

disconhnect the Batt when your pulling the ignition so ya don't get a jolt..
more info soon please..
and good luck!  :yesnod:

ignition should rotate CTRclockwise or clockwise?

are the door locks easy to take out?

so the bill of sale can be done on a white piece of plain paper with just the odometer reading, sales price, and the owner's signature?

10-4 on the battery and I will be posting pics and other goodies when I have it!   ;)

thank you for taking the time to help me, I really appreciate it.

if it's 69 the ignition is on the dash. so un-screw the outer ring on the switch, counter lock wise and the ignition should come out. then unclip the wiring plug. The doors are ez also. remove the lower door panel and you will see a open ended clip at the lock cylinder, just slide a screw driver in-between the cylinder and the tab part of the clip. then undue the linkage and bingo 2nd job done :icon_smile_big:

The ign key & door lock key should be the same.  Only the trunk is different.  The ign & door key is pentastar shaped & the trunk key is round.
IIRC the glovebox & console lock should be keyed the same as the trunk key.

The only extra key needed would be for the optional locking cap...

PS---69Charger_440, register the Charger when you get the chance

Thanks!  I ALMOST picked up the car today.  I was going to tow it about 2 miles through the back streets, but the brakes were frozen solid. :brickwall: :flame:  Now I am going to have to find another way to tow it home.  Anyone know if a tow bar will do the trick?  It's only 2 miles to my house.

Thanks again guys!

I know, I know...some people are probably thinking B.S., but all I have to say patience.  If I had to wait during this gut wrenching period AKA Buying process, than you fellas can wait just a tad bit longer for pics!! :D

I wouldn't hook a tow bar up. It wouldn't do the bumper any justice.

my bad,.. i got three differnt keys.  :-\

Congrats on the New Baby!   :yesnod:

What kind of shape is the car in?  It's obviously not running and hasn't for a while, so I hope it isn't too much of a mess.  Based on your codes, I see there's yet another chap that bought a better Charger than mine...   :-\

Sounds like you are a little new to the Mopars. You did good. You picked up a nicely optioned 69 'RT. Getting much harder to find. Are the tach and center console still present? Also, check the numbers stamped on the engine and see if they match the VIN. If so, a numbers matching, well-optioned, RT is a great platform to start for any restoration. Good luck and pics when you get a chance!

Thanks, guys!

Well since I like reading stories on good finds, etc., here is a brief story on how I found and bought the car.

Around two years ago I was sent to New Mexico due to work.  This is when I first saw the Charger.  When I asked around, the story was that the gentleman would not sell.  The car apparently had been sitting for approximately 15 years or so.  I figured "Oh well," and moved on.

Moving on to 2007; I was again sent to NM due to my job (temporarily).  Anyhow, I figured what the heck I'll swing by that Charger again and see if it is still there.  I figured by now that the Charger was either gone or the owner had it running.  Lo and behold, when I passed the house where I had last seen it, it was still sitting in the same spot.  That is when I came on this site to ask on suggestions on stopping by and asking if the car was for sale.  Some of you guys gave me some good advice, so I mustered up some courage and stopped on Monday (04/02/07).  The owner's wife answered and I guess she knew why I was there since she had a big old smile when I asked her about the car.  She told me that she wanted her husband to sell the car, but he had refused everytime someone showed up to buy the car.  She said one time that some guy came over with cash and a trailer, and was set on buying the car right then and there.  The owner refused.  Apparently  the owner had a sentimental attachment to the car since he bought it when he returned from Vietnam sometime in 1971(he is the second owner), and he and his wife went out on their first date in that car.  By this time I figured there was no chance in hell I would get this car.  So I left her my name and number and told her if they ever decided to sell that if they called me, I would be right over with the money.

On Wednesday (04/04/07), I received a voicemail from the lady.  The husband had agreed to sell to me!  I told her I would be over the next day with the money.  The rest of it is history. :icon_smile_big:

Anyhow, sorry for the long-winded story, but I figured some of you guys enjoy reading stories like these.  I know I do.

Am I knew to Mopars?  Well, I've always liked them, just could never find a deal that I felt was worth spending my hard earned money on (the hell with Ebay!)  What I am a novice in is the actual mechanic, body work, electrical, etc...aspect of the hobby.  I'm not a total klutz with tools and I can do basic to mederate mechanic work on a car.  I'm still learning and that is why I ask a lot of questions ???  Besides, I have my brother to help me out.  I bet he could give some pros a real good run for their money in all aspects of the game IMHO.

Anyhow, the car is in really good shape (IMO).  As far as the exterior goes, this is what I have noticed so far.  Everything is straight (fender, quarter panels, doors, tailpanel, grille).  The only serious rust issues that it has are the lower quarter panels, the rocker panel area right behind both doors at the very bottom.  It has what appears to be bondo on the outside sail panels.  Reason?  I have no idea, the panels look straight and have minor surface rust.  The driver's exterior mirror there but no glass.  Deck lid has rust through on the lip.

Interior is there, but torn up.  I assume that the seats were redone since they don't appear to be original and have a strange pattern and stitch.  Non A/C car.  Guages, console, glove box, ashtray all there.  Headliner is ripped.  Oh, the passenger side upper door panel is missing.  It IS MISSING the origianl engine.  Owner told me that his sister was driving it years ago, and for whatever reason it lost a lot of oil when she was driving it and she didn't notice.  It has a 318 in it right now, but not worry, I have a 440 waiting for it back home!  :D

I will post pics up as soon as I can find someone with a digital camera.  Remember guys and gals, I am only up here in NM temporarily so I didn't bring my digital camera.  Worst comes to worst I'll have to wait until my wife comes to visit in a week or so.

Thanks again,

Fernando

Cool. Im glad you could strike a deal. The bondo is where the quarter panel meets the roof. All Chargers have that from the factory. Good luck on your resto.
