Electric fuel pump question

I was having all kinds of trouble with my mechanical fuel pump when I got this car a month ago, and finally got so frustrated I just grabbed a cheap electric one from the parts store and figured it would get me by until I could either figure out what was wrong with the mechanical one or buy a quality electric one.  So last night I was doing some work to my car and had it running (fuel gauge not yet working) and I ran out of gas in the driveway.  No big deal, but I got some gas and put in it today and it wouldnt start.  It turns out my fuel pump isnt working at all, I already removed it and hooked it directly to a battery, and its not doing a thing.   I havent even had it for a whole month yet and the car has only left the driveway about 4 times.  Could it have to do with the fact that I ran it out of gas?  Seems strange that it would be junk already, even for a cheap one.  It was working just fine earlier in the day when I took the car out for a drive.  Im going to get a replacement for it tomorrow but I just dont know why it would have crapped out on me already?

it should not have failed
check the pushrod for the mechanical pump , they often wear down & or damage the cam lobe , this could be the problem with the mechanical pump

Im going to eventually try and get the mechanical one going again.  I plan to get a new fuel pump and pushrod next time.  But for now, i'll let them replace this for free since my cars set up to use it already.

I went with the high volumn fuel pump. I love it. The Chally starts a lot easier when it's cold. With the old fuel pump, I'd have to pump the gas so much it would kick the choke off.
