How Do I Get A Title?

I went to the NJ DMV and they said that I needed to go to the NY DMV to get a title. To me this makes no sense because it was never titled in NY. The guy I bought it from lived there. The last place it was titled in was TX. I want to get a title so I can drive my charger but dont know how. Are there any ways to title it through NJ? Can my car get red-flagged if I go to a title service?
Thanks,
Dan

You should have got a title when you purchased the car. Unless its from a state that doesn't have titles, then I beleive a bill of sale will be enough to get you a title in most states. Someone who lives in one of those states might be able to shed more light on it than I can.

I got no title because the previous owner had no title. It was sold at a police auction in TX so it doesnt have one.

Did you try calling a notary or title and tag service in your area?

bordin34

No I can't find any in my area. I googled NJ title service but cant find any.

Try notary service?

Im in the process of getting a bonded title for one of my cars.  Its a pain and will probably cost me about 200 bucks, but its the legal way to do things.  Id do an internet search of your states DMV and you should be able to find the paperwork, I downloaded the forms myself, filled them out and mailed them in.  Now I just need the money to pay for the bond.   :brickwall:

I cant find notary service either.
On the DMV website "bonded title" doesn't even turn up any results.
This is all I found

Thats not it.  Maybe call and ask them about it specifically?  Anyway here is the Iowa form I mentioned that I used.  If you want to read it and see what is involved.

NJ might not have bonded i guess.
Thanks for the link but some of those are collision centers. Do you think they can do anything. The fuel company whose owners live 600ft. from me dont seem like they are either.

I'm not sure , you might have to go to the DMV to find out.

Unless for some reason your state doesnt do bonded titles, you should look into it.  Read the page I linked to above.

I read it and I wish i could find something like that on the Nj website. Anybody know if a 15 year old can register a car in PA if they have a house there? I don't think I can find a way in NJ.

I do know this in PA. My daughter titled the Super Coupe in her name when she was 14. But she can't register it til she has her own insurance policy and driver's lic.or we put it in my name on my insurance.

bordin34

The super coupe had a title though right? I guess if I can title it in PA than "sell" it to my parents in NJ I can register it.

Yes the Super Coupe had a PA title.

Broadway title in Alabama. It's totally legit. I just don't know if NJ is a state they do titles for. It takes 1 to 3 months for turnaround.

I would do something like that but want to avoid it if at all possible.

I used this place for one of my cars:  http://www.its-titles.com/index.htm   Got the paper work back from them in 3 weeks, sent it off to the state, 3 weeks later I had my title...

bordin34

Can my car get red-flagged somehow if I use them and they screw up? Thats the only reason I dont want to use it.

I don't know what you mean my "reg flagged" but as long as your car is legal, I don't see how you could get in trouble.  A friend of mine had to get a title, and he just had to request it from the state.  The state then sent out a cop to verify that the car existed and he had a title.

I read that some states are cracking down on title places and if they find out you used one they may make it so you can never get one. As far as I have read NJ doesn't have something like that.

Contact the title company-they know which states won't play ball-they have a list of states they won't do business with because of this...

They seem like they will be better, cheaper, and faster than the DMV, but I can't E-Mail them to ask if they do NJ titles.
