Howdy

well, we fought it out last December , before winter came in  we wanted to replace the  left quarter, trunk extention and cap  on the daytona before winter came in . we got two good days in a row that where about 50 degrees and where able to get it done . after that it got very cold.
all the metal inside the quarters was in good shape so where the wheel wells  . i spent 2 hours with a grinder and took off all the surface rust in there i could find . then i used eastwood's rust converter and rust encapsulater . there wasn't much there but  since i store my cars outside i do it as a precaution. i also paint all the new parts with rust encapsulater and a lot of welding spray .
sorry about the crappy pics . it was cold and pictures where the last thing on my mind . i didn't want it to rain or snow while i had the side off the car . that would suck .
next I'm gonna replace the right side quarter . I'll take better pics this time and share . the f

Your right done is a big word . i meant this part of the car is kinda done . it will need a complete blocking sanding and icing before paint .

BigBlockSam

thanks guys . with this economy , money has been really tight . so work has slown down on the daytona.

summers here so . it's time to git her done!

when i bought car i didn't think she needed quarters . just a small patch but  they where full of bondo . luckily , i bought that car off a member of this board . he also so gave me tons of parts and sheet metal. so i had the parts i needed to do the job.

I LUV IT WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHERT!

that's the whole deal . these cars are meant to be driven .

i think that before this winter hits it should be done with it's flat black paint job . base coat black . flat clear coat , so it will be durable and washable . red painted wing and stripe . shiny clear coat on red .

then down the road. when i install the 6 pack motor then i'm building for it and remove this one . i will paint it white with a red tail . who knows,  i might just keep it flat black and build another project  :shruggy: :nana:

i bought the headliner from year one . that's all i have left to do .

if i didn't do another thing to this car . i would be proud to drive it as is .

Rene, the problem that I have with my Daytona clone is that I don't know where to stop. I've been doing total restorations for so long that it's difficult to just put a little lipstick on a car and call it done. I didn't totally disassemble this car and place it on a rostisserie like I normally do because my intention was just to build myself a driver. It's still going to be just a driver. But, what I worry about is people looking underneath and down into the cracks and crevices and thinking that this is the way that I restore cars. It isn't, but I'm sure that they will think that it is. See my dilemma? Some of the car is looking top notch while the rest of it is unrestored.

I keep thinking about maybe sanding the clearcoat on the entire car with a trizac 3000 grit disc on a da and taking it back to a flat finish. Maybe that will define the car as not being restored. I would have no problem with doing that. The beauty of sanding the clearcoat like that is that it can be rebuffed or re-shot later if the need were to arise. Doesn't show scratches as much either.
I've even been looking at black rims for the car and maybe going with more of a Mr. Angrier look. The difference would be the wing would also be flat black on my car and I would be using the stock driveline. I know that several of the guys have been going in this direction and I don't want them to think that I'm just trying to copy them. It's just that it keeps coming down to this being a logical step with this car.
This is a big part of the reason that the car is not finished. I kind of started thinking about where I was going with this project and then just stopped and got busy with customer work.

I like the way that your car looks. I think that not being a show poodle makes the car stand out. Place several real Daytonas at a local cruise night with one car like yours mixed in and I can guarantee you that your car will get as much attention as the originals...maybe more. Most people can identify with the unrestored looking musclecar. They think... "hey, I could build a car like that". :hack:

i see what you mean , just call it your shop's parts car . you know , the one that you use to get parts . not a show car . your driver,  like the blue winged roadrunner. F anyone that don't understand . build this car for yourself . fun . anybody that knows you and the cars you've done knows the quality of the cars you build . put the front on it and that will steer you in the right direction.  the road will open for you and you'll know your direction.  :2thumbs:

you don't know how many people come up to me at shows or just in the street . they say . don't touch the daytona .leave it as it is . there are so many over restored cars out there . they luv the primer look .

once it's built you can upgrade things later . THE CAR WILL SPEAK TO YOU

Howie came down last week to bring me his steel Daytona nose. He rode in the wingrunner for the first time.
I think he might have liked it a little. He kept asking me when I could finish his Daytona.
Wings are addictive. He's even talking about building a winged 70 Cuda for a daily driver after his Daytona clone is finished.

OK back to work

my to do list seems never to get smaller . i had an electrical problem i kept blowing fuses . it took a while to find the problem . my rt hood blinker was shorting out in the housing . i believe it was cause i used in original housing with a repro wire set . so I'm ordering a repro housing .

i put two new bf goodrich 245 60 tires on the back . they will eventually be the front tires . with 275 60;'s on the back .

the car looks real mean but sounded whimpy . so i changed the big mufflers for cherry bombs , glass packs .man it sounds mean now . loud
