Trying to degree a Crower 271DHP camshaft for the first time in my life  :scratchchin:

I´ve read a few articles "how to do it".. going for the .050" (1.27mm) lift method..

Here´s my camcard: http://crower.com/misc/cam_spec/cam_finder.php?part_num=32242&x=37&y=10

Problem is.. keep getting very stange results..

Intake opens 55 degrees BTDC.. close 15 degrees BBDC

Exhaust opens 76 degrees ATDC (or 114 degrees BBDC).. and closes 52 degrees BTDC

Timing chain marks are aligned.. TDC was found with a piston stop.
Got same results on both 1 and 3 cylinder
Using a dial indicator.. setting it to zero at zero lift. Measuring at the edge at the lifter.. not in the center

Cant see how intake should open 3 degrees BTDC when my cam almost is at maximum lift att TDC  :shruggy:

PLEASE help a newbie  :brickwall:

No.. haven´t tried it.. I´ve read a few articles but since I´ve the .050" opening and closing points listed on my card, I thought that was the easy way to do it.

Just to double check... Are you sure you are on the intake lobe of the first cylinder?  It will be the second lifter from the front, drivers side...

I´m sure.. I´ve done the hole thing over again on the 3rd cylinder to.. same result

Tomorrow i´m gonna remove the hole cam and chain.. see if I can find something wrong

Try using the intake centerline method.  ;) Comp and Crane have detailed instructions on their websites.

Ps. When setting up the dial indicator you want to zero it in at MAX lobe lift and rotate it forward and reverse .050 to get your numbers. Add the two numbers together then divide by two and you will have the installed intake centerline.

that's the way i do it, just be sure when you go reverse that you take it a bit pass .050 and then go forward to .050. this takes out any slack in the chain and gives you a correct reading.

Sorry.. messed things up when timing chain was installed  ::)  :brickwall:
Anyway.. had to retard the camshaft 4 degrees in order to match the cam card. Is this common..?

Thanks for your help

That seems to be pretty normal from everything I have read.  My cam was off 2 degrees.....

Yep, cam's need to be degreed in for this very reason. You could have a 2* offset with both the chain and  cam or it could be 4* with the cam or 4* with the chain. Production tolerances.  ;)

Good work getting it lined up !
