OK last night I started the car and noticed a noise from the engine at first I thought it was the alternator sounded like a bearing squeal so I took off all the belts and eliminated the alternator water pump and power steering and tit still made the noise. so I put a scope on it and started to listen and it seams to be coming from around the distributor it was the most noticeable on the distributor hold down bolt! this was running at 1000 rpm and pushing 60psi oil pressure! has any one experience any thing similar, any suggestions????? thanks

Yes, I had a 440 doing the same thing. Pull the distributer and look at the shaft.  There is a bearing that the shaft goes through.  If it is bad, it will start to grind the Dist. Shaft and you won't miss it.  It's a easy fix, to pull the bearing out and put a new one in.  You may have to replace the Dist. also.
Good luck. Let us know what you find.

the dist drive bushing may be grabbing the drive & spinning in the block

thanks I'll check it out! so just to be clear the bearing is in the bottom of the distributor and nothing special to remove it? also is it a bearing or a bushing?

I'll take a look at it tonight!

Thanks for the help guys!

OK I took the distributor out last night to check the bottom bushing and didn't see anything wrong with it I removed the lower retaining collar to check out the bushing and it was tight I couldn't move it. I also removed the intermediate shaft and check it out didn't see anything. put it all back together and started the car and no noise but it was getting late so I didn't let it get up to temp maybe I will have more time tonight.

Wile checking out the distributor A new question came up does the distributor get lubrication and how or is it not required ?  thanks for the help guys!

some periods and commas missed, huh ? :P

distributor doesn't get or need lubrication, just the intermediate shaft with bushing  but by gravity after oil cames up to heads and start to drip
