How can you tell a 440 from a 400 just by looking at it?I want to make sure the motor I found in the an RV is a 440.Also the guy said the transmission in the RV wouldn't work in my car as it has an air brake on the transmission. Can this be taken off?

Maybe this can explain it.  It also has links to other pages in the article itself. :icon_smile_big:

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

For a quick visual the 440 will have a machined raised pad to the left of the distributor. It should have a stamping like G440 indicating the year.

A low block will not have the pad at all. Here is a pic of where to look for it.
