The guy we bought dad's old 69 RT/SE back from called the other day, said he was looking through his barn and found an 18 spline 4 speed tranny with the 11" flywheel. (must be rough) Said he has a guy from the twin cities offer him 1500, but he'd sell it to us since we need it for the car for 900. Is this worth snatching up right now, or is it something we can find down the road for compareable money?

I think its pretty good, but this car is way down the road on the list of projects. Just want to see what everyone thinks?

If he did really get a $1,500 offer he better take it. The new Passon units were $1800 last I checked and ready to go. If you spend the $1500 + rebuild cost the price will be more than new. The flywheel may or may not be worth $100-$200 depending on condition.

If your car is an original 4 speed and this is the #'s matching tranny then I would say to grab it and the flywheel for the $900 because it is worth more to you than anyone else. Did he mention whether the bellhousing was there also?

The tranny would be non numbers matching. I already have two bellhousings so thats a nil issue.

Whats the going rate for a core?

I have not followed them closely over the winter but last year I was seeing 18 splines iin the $700-$1200 range depending on condition and what was included. That is why I asked about the bellhousing. Things that go with like shifter handles, shifters, dust covers, and flywheels add value to the purchase.

I paid $200 for a complete 833OD that was usable last year and paid $450 for my 18 spline with shifter and bellhousing back in the late 90's so prices are way up since I bought an 18 spline tranny. I would consider the $900 a fair price and maybe watch Ebay over the next few days to see where things are at. Keep in mind there are shipping costs with anything not close. I think one 18 spline was advertised here last fall for $750 rebuilt so there are always price fluctuations.

Used prices for 18 splines needing rebuilt are ~$550-800. Passon and Brewers both sell completely rebuilt units for under $1,800 but that's only the trans. They sell used ones for $795 or so. Obviously you still need to buy everything else. I bought a nice used one that looks practically new inside a while back for $1,100 and at the time I thought it was a steal. The flywheel may be worth $100 if it doesn't need anything more than cleaned up. Check the output shaft as well for the shifter mounts because if it fits an e-body they sell for slightly more (at least in my experience).

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

MOPARHOUND!

Last two that sold were over $900, which includes crating and shipping of roughly around $200, IIRC.

One was a 67 model, freshly rebuilt, but part of the input shaft was cut.  Check this on the trans before buying it!  If there is at least an inch remaining beyond the splines, you can use a roller bearing thingy Passon sells, works slick, and a million 318 manual Dodges have them nowadays.

Other was a 68, used, but inspected by 2 different guys that knew 4 speeds, and met with their approval.

$900 is on the high end for a used 18-spline.   $6-750 more realistic, if there are no chipped teeth, excessive wear.  The 70 and up models had the two shifter mounts, and tend to bring more $$$.

Check the VIN pad, and post it if you can.

*Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go, and for how long?"
*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."
