i have a carter carb with a list number 4682sa i know it is listed for a 1969 383 HP auto but the question i have is.

what does the letter "a" stand for after the s?

resq302

the A stands for a factory revision.  My 4615SA carb has two mixture screws near where the base gasket is as opposed to the S version which just has one air mixture screw that was a left hand threaded screw higher up and centered in the carb.   Basically the factory did revisions and just used a letter to designate that a change was made.  I guess if they had two revisions, it would have been something like SB possibly.

thanks very much for the reply, i was also told that the "a" could have been an aftermarket factory replacement and not the carb that was directly used on the assembly line.

another strange question i have is what does the "s" actually stand for?

The Winged Warriors/National B body owners association did an article on this.  I will have to see if I can scan it and post it on here.  Answered a lot of my questions to things I never knew.

Just when you think you have a good understanding of our cars, you always find out more info that you didn't know.  Kind of a humbling, yet aggrivating, experience.

resq302, thanks very much for taking the time to post that information. i had no clue what that stuff meant and it helped to answer a lot of questions for me.

Yeah, same for me when I read it in the newsletter.  Really good info and club if you own a B body car.
