Looks pretty cool to me.  Curious to see what others say.  I have an MS7 with 8251 coil so I will not be taking advantage of this conversion however it looks like a reasonable solution to a long time issue.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

that's the kicker, much more susceptible to problems in that location.

I talked to the guy who runs designs 2 drive on the phone today, his area code is the same as mine but after talking to him i found out he lives in my neighborhood. I'm going to go buy his house next week and check out what he sales

I dont run a distributor anymore...      problem solved!

Those 4-pin hei modules are like $20 at auto zone and rock solid reliable.  When I was fiddling with my ignition I used one for a while.  I'm only not using it now because I decided to run an MSD box.  I never had it in that location, of course...  I'd think it should be fine, though.  The firewall in some of the tighter-spaced GMs it's stock in gets pretty warm, too.

When I talked to the guy from designs 2 drive he told me I could use a later model Dodge electronic distributor that will fit eather a 383 or 400 engine, if I'm mistaken 383 never came with electronic distributor so can someone tell me what year and model had a 400 engine with a electronic that i could use.

I am not convinced a gm HEi is more reliable than a ballast resister
72 & up 400 had electronic ign & the dist will work as long as it is not a lean burn unit

pb24

Thanks for your replay. I have heard that the GM HEI are very reliable and if it goes bad they are easy to find at any auto parts store.
Correct me if I'm wrong but if you get rid of the ballast resister and deliver a full 12 volts to the coil you can get a hotter spark.

How can I tell if it is a lean burn unit

defiance

Just as a note, some people have indicated that the coil design is what drives the need for the ballast resistor - NOT the source of the spark.  If that's so, you'd have to change the coil as well.  In my case, I never had the stock coil in the car; I went with an accel to start with - so I wouldn't know if this is true or not.

pb24

You are correct you have to replace the coil with a high voltage one to get the full benefit. Has a side note whey do you need to lower the
voltage to the coil with a ballast resistor.
