My Charger starts up great when it is warmer. When it's a little colder, Fall like weather, he won't start. Yes- the choke is on. It closes completely. Anyone else have this issue with thier small block?  ???

Mine starts and stalls exactly 3 times and then idles until it warms up.

The 318 in the 74 Satellite fires right up all the time.  The 360 in the Fury I have never starts.  I always have to prime the caarb and set the choke to get it to fire off.

I have an Edelbrock Preformer 600 manual choke. I think it is a mid- life crisis thing myself.  :icon_smile_big:  He will be 33 next month.

Hey NH, juts read some of the post... you said you have NON CHOKE CARBS... THEN THAT'S the problem. YOU NEED A CHOKE... they were invented and installed for some reason ::).

on My stock TQ carb just need to pump one or two times then starts just right at fast idle for warming

Thanks everyone!! My husband had the same problem on his 318 69 Charger. That also had an Edelbrock. My Charger starts great the rest of the day. I did adjust it today, considering the car was from Kansas. I live in Florida. The past week was hot. Since i have had this problem in the last few days it has been damp and colder. When I had adjusted the carb to be alittle richer, closed the choke, it fired right up.  I was wondering why after so many pump of the gas, that the smell was not as strong as it should have been. I'll see if tomorrow he starts right up.

You don't say ;)

Both of my Chargers are manual choke. I had the choke hooked up for a while on my 71 but for some reason the cable kinked one day, I had to disconnect it and never bothered to hook it back up.
Because the eddys seem to be self draining units I still had to pump the pedal to get it started. I'm going to be installing a manual choke on my 72 before I run it this year, I'll have to see how much of a difference it makes on the initial start.

LOL  ;D Yah! Is that good or bad?  What did you think......   ;D Then again, any woman that has a Charger like mine, would have to be single. A man in thier right mind wouldn't go for that, her 2 Trans Ams and her macho Dakota . LOL!  (My husband thinks my Charger is a piece of junk. :-[ )

try pulling the intake off & cleaning out the heat crossover , it is always blocked with carbon

Thank you! Why didn't i think of that!?  ;D  I adjusted the choke according to the weather instead of always turning on the choke all the way. I pump the throttle at least twice. It has woked well now. I had also cleaned out my carb.

My 318 will crank. It just won't run now. It ran great the other night. When I had gotten home,
I had shut it off and turned it back on. Started great! the last few days, it just won't start. It did run for about 5 seconds and then it just cut off.  I checked the fuel filter. Not clogged. I'm getting fuel into the bowls. Is there a tried and true way to check a mechanical fuel pump?  I did hear about the ECU causing a problem like this. Is it the box on the far right of the firewall? I know that the one next to it is a voltage regulator. That is brand new. Also, when the car is being started it sounds to strong to be the starter. I do not hear any clicking. I know that I can jump the terminals on the solenoid. Any suggestions besides a dirty valley pan in the intake? I'm thinking that it is the fuel pump?

oftenly, ECU module &/or dist plug get loosen or dirty causing not start... yes ECU module is the one at the end of firewall just above A/C blower.

to check if you have some Ignition trouble, unplug spark wire of dist ( the one coming from coil ) and get it close to any ground source and crank engine with key on RUN position. You must get sparks there for a while is cranking.

if not, then could it be anything from ECU to dist plug,  loosen bulkhead plug, damaged coil or ballast...

I checked the obvious stuff like the cap/wires/spark yesterday. I'm thinking it could be the fuel pump or the ECU. How many volts should a properly working ECU read when you test it with a volt meter?

4 pins just need 12 volts coming from ignition switch... is blue traced yellow wire.

5 pins use that same wire and another external source coming from ballast, green traced red wire

black wire is a pulsating signal to close coil circuit when pick up get reluctor point signal, making the spark.

the other wires, brown and tan are the pick up  ones, what are the sensor to give the ECU spark order.

You can check between brown and tan wires for pick up resistance... it should be between 190 and 900 ohms. if you get that reading then you have good pick up AND related wires and plug, however that doesn't mean is making good contact with ECU pins.

There is a pin on ECU module... one of the pick up wires, that should read continuity with body ground, but don't remember which one

Nacho, I replaced my ECU. He crancked right over. No problems now. I even adjusted my carb.   ;D Thank you, again Nacho for leading me in the right direction.
