Restore or modify?

My Charger is a 1974 Spring Special with the full vinyl Celebrity Roof, front/rear sway bars/power steering and disks. I had heard that the numbers were real low on these cars. Should I modify it or restore him to his former glory? The 3rd gens look mean when they are modified.

Imo, modify....   If the Charger isn't fully documented and complete, building it back to a complete "original" state will be costly, not to mention quite difficult.   Plus documentation is very important when it comes to the selling of an original car.    I also hate to say that low numbers doesn't necessarily mean that something is desirable in terms of re-sale value.   Sometimes, low production numbers are simply good for "cool" conversation factor.   ;)

rare does not equal desirable. I say modify it unless you like what it is otherwise. if you like how it was stock, go stock by all means. if not. build a toy.

Ghoste

When you say modify, do you mean things like swapping out the 318 for a 440 or chopping off the top to make some kind of roadster pickup ?

THE CHARGER PUNK

if its a 318 car cut that roof off and make a convertible a 3rd gen charger vert would look sweet :yesnod:

Ghoste

By "sweet", you mean hacked up and goofy, right?

::) convertible  :pity:

Comming back to topic: If you find the way to restore the interior, specially aztec seat covers, I would come back to "original", maybe with some touchs ups, like keeping the bulged hood, and installing a Big Block. With Bulged hood installed you already got a Rallye car, since you already have the rest of package. Just would need to reinstall the rallye stripes, However still not available the original gradated rallye stripes.

It looks your 74 had bench, so I would try to find one and get it back. They are not hard to find, and fairly cheap. The hardest part is the aztec covers. OR maybe try to find a buddy seat and brackets, keeping the buckets you already have.

I know who still could have a rear bench with aztec cover in good conditions. I have the buckets covers I removed from the buckets with aztec interior I got. in good driver conditions, but since one of them was unseamed ( sp?? ) to make locally the new white covers then one of the buckets have the cloth section take appart. Buddy seat is plain white

Definitelly would keep the opera window and full vinyl roof. That's a nice Touch up on a Charger and definitelly not common. If you don't want the opera window and full vinyl roof, then sell it and get a Hardtop with roll down quarter windows. IMHO don't modify THAT stuff. Fortunatelly, that opera window and full vinyl roof don't look GOOFY like SEs louvers and 3/4 top

Those are my thoughts.

Nacho, I was thinking the same thing.  ;D Thanks guys for your help! It hit me last night. Make it a modded Spring Special. Definately keeping the full vinyl Celebrity roof with opera window. I love the look too much.

yeah, I'd go with modify..numbers on those may be low, but 3rd gens. aren't too hard to come by in general, so i'd say have fun with it and wait to do a factory restoration until you have a really rare car. just my  :Twocents:

bordin34

I would slightly modify it. If you ver want to get rid of those opera window covers I will happily buy them.

I say make it your own. Mine's a 318 ( not stock) Disguised as a 340.  ;) I kept the it pretty much stock. I have a lot of people tell me they would change the color. But it had a new paint job when I bought him. It's the original color so I really don't think I'm gonna mess with it.
