speedometer cable problems

I removed the old speedometer cable from the trans, but the last tip is stuck inside the hole in the trans.
ive tried to spray it with lubricant and removing it with a plier, but the damn thing is just stuck, wierd thing is that the thing moves a bit in and out.
the plier cant get a good grip.

and ideas on how to remove it? does it have to be turned or something?

You might have to remove the cover and take the whole pinion out?  It shouldn't be stuck but then you could see better whats wrong.
