Did you know?.. There's a unique 426 Hemi dist. holddown?

Here's a pic of the 426 hemi distributor holddown I just cleaned up..Working on my hemi for the '68 Charger R/T... Thought I'd post a pic. I was thinking when I had the 440 one next to the 426 hemi version that there may be people who don't even know there's a difference......

The 426 hemi version has the notch in it and the tip area that touched the block is flat unlike the curved end of the regular big block type....

you learn something new every day...  Thanks for posting.

Something else to look for at shows.  I am guessing that the Crate Hemi's come with the regular big block type?

hemi68charger

You'll notice on this picture the issue seems to be coil wire clearance.. As we all know, the 426 hemi has a unique coil mounting position...

And the Crates come with a different intake.  Sooooo, if you wanted to install a stock style intake with stock coil location, you may just find yourself needing that little devil.

Troy

Yes, that's one of the few things I actually knew about Hemis. :D

I don't have a snazzy picture like you do though. (Well, now I do!)

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Just found out and it makes sense, that they notch is for clearance for the adjustment when 426 wedge and 426 hemi motors are equipped with a cross-ram.. The intake is close to the holddown..........

The notched holddown was originally only used with the Max Wedge and Race Hemi crossrams but the same part number is called for on the '66-'69 Street Hemi, the '70 and '71 Street Hemi use the same un-notched holdown that fits all BB's back to '58.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Gonna move this into the engine tech section for future refrence.

Thanks for the info Troy & others

roger gibson sells the correct notched bracket.  One of his 1970 hemi cuda restorations used the notched bracket.  I wonder if he is incorrect?

1970 used the same bracket

Ghoste

So 1971 is the only year that is the same as the wedge big blocks?

Ghoste

Well then, according to that link, ALL Street Hemi's from ALL years used a notched hold down.

John_Kunkel

The factory parts book disagrees with the restoration details link, the parts book reference is 8-27-26 CLAMP.

P/N for the notched holddown is 2406143, this was introduced in '64 for use on the Max Wedge and Race Hemi. (The '62 and '63 Max Wedges used the un-notched holddown) The '66-'69 Street Hemi also uses the 2406143.

P/N for the un-notched holddown is 1947613, this is the number called for in the '70-'71 parts book for the Street Hemi and all big blocks. The 2406143 number doesn't even appear in the '70-'71 parts book.

My  unrestored  70 hemi has the notched holddown, as far as 71 goes maybe someone that has an original can respond

Ghoste

It's possible that in 70 and 71 they were still using the notched style as original equipment but changed to the more readily available big block one for the service part.

I wonder whos going to be the first guy to get his grinder out and turn normal big block hold downs into Hemi ones? I'm got this feeling we will be seeing "NOS" Hemi distributor hold brackets comming to Ebay SOON! ;)

Ghoste

Actually I think I have a half a dozen of them in my garage right now.  I only want a hundred dollars each for them so jump in now before the price goes up. :icon_smile_big:

I know someone who already modifies them. They don't sell as NOS or original but they look pretty good.

I've got one that has the flat bottom but isn't notched.  If you grind the round one flat, I suspect it will be too short.  It came off a block stamped A 383 HP.  I'd never seen one of those either.  I also have the notched one on my '66 hemi.  they do look different.

Rolling_Thunder

Hmmm...      interesting...     I scored one of these without knowing it...      purchased a 440 for $50.00 and used that as my stroker base...     it has one of these on there...       I think...      is there a part number stamped somewhere on the clamp ?  there is NOT one present on mine...    but it is as long at the stock 440 clamp so i know it is not a cut down one. It does have the notch as well...     just no part number present - this normal ?

no parts numbers stamped on any of the brackets . and yes the bracket with the flat ground into it was originally used for cross ram cars, it just worked for others as well.
the bolt holding any or all r/rb brackets was a highland bolt  with a loose washer, (not a captive washer ) Bolt has an (H) head marking
