I have a weird one for you.... This is from a 68 Charger, but there are some things out of place. whats this mean?

XP29B8x074132 ?

B = Slant 6
X = ???

Sequence that doesn't start with a 1?

whats up with this car?

All Mopars used a uniform vin #.
The vin supplies information about the model and the sub-model, as well as the engine,model year,assembly plant, and serial #.
The first four digits are the body #s.
It's like this.
1st digit = car line, or model
2nd digit = price class or the sub model
3rd and forth digit = body style
5th = engine type and sise
6th = year model
7th= assembly plant
8 to 13 = serial #

Example
A 68-69 charger would start with XP29
68-70 charger r/t  would start with XS29
69 charger 500 and Daytona would start with XX29
and a 70 charger 500 = XP29
Car line
Chrysler only used three different letters as the first digit on their cars.
X=Charger
w=Coronet
R=Plymouth
Keep in mind though that in 71  the chargers were designated with the letter W and not X.
Hope this helps you
David

Sounds like a typo. Can you post a picture?

right, I got that, thats how I knew it was originally a slant 6 car. But what I'm confused at is what plant is "X" and why doesn't the sequence start with a 1?

shouldn't it be 100001?

and just so you guys don't think I'm smelling fumes ;) here is the radiator support stamp to show what I mean, it's defiantly an X and the sequence doesn't start with a 1.

BTW, how many slant 6 cars where made in 68?

That's a standard Sales order (SO) stamping for 68. In 68, the VIN is not stamped on the radiator support, the SO number is. Your post said VIN tag that's why the confusion.

I agree with 69CoronetRT.

Also, The B in the order number is not the engine code, it is the assembly plant, Hamtramck, MI.

No.

B=Hamtramck plant
8=1968 model year
X=first digit of the car line/VIN (X=Charger)
the numbers are the SO number which will also be found on the tag.

O.k. ... it's all comming together now.

Now I don't feel bad because of finding this. Because this is my Radiator support brace. While doing my bodywork I noticed the numbers didn't match, at some point my car must have gotten a new one. I thought they hacked a slant 6 charger up for my car ;)

B bodies were assembled at four plants from 68 to 71.
The 68 charger was assembled only at the hamtrack,Michigan plant.
The letter for that plant is B .
Getting interesting ???

IIRC, STL also built some late in the year.

So these numbers don't match the ones on your tag? Do you have the broadcast sheet?

Post the VON on your fender tag, or at least make sure that it does / does not have the same VON as the radiatior support. The VON is NOT the same as the VIN.  ;)

no they don't, and yes I have my broadcast sheet. The car was in a front end accident long ago. Someone took the front end off of some 68 and graphed it onto my 69. Thats why I posted this thread. I was curious to know if the original donor car was still in one piece.

Well, it couldn't really be in one piece.  It's missing a rad cradle at least.  ;)

69charger2002

lol that's fo sho. would be cool to see someone have that order number and be restoring that very same 68 charger. but chances are if the 69 had a busted front end, and they took a rad support out of a 68 to fix the 69, the 68 must have been toast to begin with, and is probably not still around
that 68 VON vs VIN thing got me for a while at first. i thought every 68 charger i had bought was a bogus car because the fender tag and rad support NEVER matched the VIN..
thanks to the old board i learned how retarded they did it in 1968
trav
i live in CHARGERLAND.. visitors welcome. 166 total, 7 still around
