i wonder what that will go for ....  thinking a bout it if i had a superbird & drove it in stead of trailering it or a clone , i think i would scared to put a NOS on it for fear of somebody damaging it , i think i would feel better having a repop one & keeping the NOS cone  unused ..

What advantage would it be to spend a small fortune on this vs a re-pop metal , besides bragging you spent some of your kids college money ?????????????

Painted or not,I'd be suprised if it doesn't double what it is now.

Larry you ask what would be the advantage of getting that one over buying a reproduction? ONE major difference ORIGIONAL and reproduction. Even my 3 year old understands that one.

I did the same thing to a NOS Bird hood several years ago to keep it from rusting.  I guess if anything it opens the door to question what the nose really is.  For instance, is it a Gene Gregory steel nose from ten years ago, or a real NOS nose?    NOS noses are delivered in cosmoline.    If I had to bet, I would believe it is the real deal NOS piece.

daytonalo

Thanks for the tip sunshine !!!!!! I will go very slow for you , IS IT WORTH MAYBE SPENDING TWICE ON A NOS PART , WHEN A REPOP IS CORRECT , WHAT DID YOU GAIN ?  OK HAVING THE BOX RIGHT ?

hemigeno

Under that same logic then Larry, a clone of any musclecar should be worth as much as the original.  Ain't gonna happen.  Period.

daytonalo

Hey were on the same page , a real hemi daytona 350 - 800 k , a done correctly replica 125k any questions ???????????

hotrod98

I mentioned this several months ago, but I believe a lot of wingcar owners think that their car has the original nose, when in fact it has one of Gean Gregory's repro noses. Gean built a bunch of them a few years back. Where are they if they're not on someone's car? He sold every one of them and I don't think those noses were used on clones. Gean even mentioned to me that they were mostly bought by the guys with the real wingcars. He said that the cloners just won't spend that kind of cash.
The funny part is...those guys are turning up their noses at clones when in fact the car that they're driving is part clone.  ;D

I would highly suspect that this is an NOS nosecone (bought 20 years ago, spot-welded wiring clips, etc.), although I don't know if it was really the wisest thing to do to epoxy prime it.  He probably did that before the whole wing car market went loopy.

Assuming that it is an NOS nose, it might not be the best candidate for a cloned car.  I'm not trying to say that any cloned Daytona/Bird/500 should have its original aero parts removed - not at all.  However, when a part like this pops up, chances are no one who is doing a clone would want to put down the cabbage for an original part when a repro part would serve just as well.  On that much, I agree.

However, I disagree with your blanket assessment that paying twice as much (or more) for an NOS nosecone is ludicrous for EVERYONE.  Here is your quote:

(emphasis added)

If you had an original Bird (wouldn't even have to be a HemiBird in my book) missing its nosecone, it might very much be worth the investment in the part.  The box doesn't matter, but having an original nosecone DOES.

From a clone perspective, I agree - there might be alternatives like Gean Gregory's noses that make real good economic sense.  To make the blanket statement that you did is not correct at all - no matter how slowly you explain it.   :rotz:  Not everyone is building a clone, some are fixing up original cars - plus, if you don't like the price it's going for, don't bid.  It's that simple.  Even this country boy from Missouri can figure that out.

Oh, and not everyone looks at clones as trash.  That's classic stereotyping on your part - but why am I not surprised?

hotrod, you make a good point that some folks who bought their cars "done" in the last 10 years or so might not even realize that their car has a repro nose on it.  If that's the case though, someone DID know that and failed to disclose it to a subsequent buyer.  Could have been a flipper who bought the car and was told that factoid, but conveniently left that off the description when selling it to someone else to make a few more greenbacks.

If my original nose gets banged up beyond repair, you bet I'd put a repro steel nose on it if I couldn't find/buy an original.  I'd feel obligated to tell whomever I sold the car to about that change, and there would be photos out the wazoo about it as well.  However, that doesn't mean that every subsequent owner/seller would faithfully relay that same information.  Kinda like Danny (69_500) and I were talking about on Saturday.  It's amazing how many numbers-matching Daytonas and 500s are out there now that were documented as not having their original engines back when they were for sale in the '80s.

69_500

Well I was going to explain my comment a little more but I think that Gene covered it pretty well.

I never said there was a bad thing about a clone, however I personally to be honest don't care for them too much. Not to say that they are bad, but just not my cup of tea. Yeah I'd love to have a wing car? Do I have the money to get a real one? NO. do I have the money to buy a clone? Probably. Will I? NO. Its just my opinion but I'd rather be without a wing car, than to have a clone. That is just by my choice.

However is a real Superbird nose cone worth more than a repro? Definately.

BigBlockSam

yea, i agree clones suck , now replica's are real cool.

i appreciate the machine . if it's a well built machine, i can dig it .

you have never seen a wing car replica that you like? thats kinda strange . i don't like vw's but i've seen some that are cool . Rene

Depends on how 'Correct' the repop is. I can assure you some people will not buy repop parts. it's mint used - or nos factory parts only.
Granted that portion of people is growing smaller by the minute, but they do exist.

69_500

I'm trying to think if any clones, or replica's whatever you want to call them, all the same to me. And I really can't think of any that I really liked. Now granted, I did kind of like the HEMI 500 that was recently for sale on ebay, with the Daytona nose and wing. However I like that car for what it is, a HEMI 500, now the wing and nose are fine, but I'd prefer it to be a 500. It would be fun to drive in its current state, but if I had purchased the car I'd have taken it back to a 500.

if it really was NOS , he gave it away , considering a repo sells for 7500.00 . The guy thought he could retire from it more than likely .

Mfr426

He DID give that away and to Mr. Frank Mitchell....

Frank will sell that for four times that...

Or let it sit in storage as a housing project for spiders gathering dust until it does.

Well it appears to have been sitting in somewhere for the past 20+ years anyways. So what is anothe 20 years of storage.
