  I assume you are talking about one in a car...?  I use a personal hand-held monitor for trips.  They ROCK!  Garmin Legend GPS... Blue pkg you can find at Target for $179.99...   The thing leaves a "bread crumb trail" if you are out in the wilderness, and you can mark "waypoints" like your bud's house in the middle of San Diego... AWESOME stuff...
