They had an epesode on Mythbusters that tried to prove or disprove this.

I think they said that it was near to impossible to happen.

The Mythbusters episode welded a metal rod into the gun barrel and that didn't do it (shot the rod out). Finally they plugged it so full of crap, rocks, dirt, etc that all it did was create a bulge in the barrel.

I agree with Drache you would think that it would just shoot out the laser sight, that would cost less force than splitting open the barrel than that I would think. And there is one thing given it will go the path of the least resistance...

Yeah, those barrel splits are just a little too perfect.


I had a friend once who had a single shot rifle explode in his face...he got a couple stitches above his eye. Pretty lucky, really

It could be a doctored photo.............I'm not sure really. I also watched the Mythbusters episode and remember they did have a time making it split the barrel.

yeah  i saw that one   .........  they could not get the barrel to  split  no matter what ....

heres one   a local kid he was 15 at the time well he was duck hunting and a carp swamm under him as he was in the boat well the dummy put the mossberg 500 12 gauge under the water about one foot and tried to shoot that carp  didnt get the carp but  there was nuthing left of the mossberg barrel except for the ventilated rip which was bent up at 180 degrees     was funny especially when you ask him what he was thinking

I've done that a couple times and I've yet to encounter a broken barrel...

well i seen the gun and heard it come striaght from the kid that shot the gun said he had the barrel under water about 1 foot then sqeezed ,,,,,    i dont know maybe you got lucky

Did he stick the entire gun underwater? I usually only stick the end of the barrel in!

he said to about where the magazine tube ends and that was about where the ventilated rib started its 180 degree bend  but the first 4 inches of the barrel are gone  also since he was duck hunting he was using steel shot whiich doesn't  deform like lead shot does when shot so that could be a possibility also

Testing this right now on Mythbusters, and it was plausable. They used the exact same type of rifle and set up, and they did get a split, but not like in the first picture.

I just watched the mythbusters episode lastnight and they concluded it as plausable. they split and wrinkled up the barrel on the first try. didn't bannana peel it like that one, but their test gun was new. the split gun in the pick may have had some miles on it. or I was thinking some hotter loads.
