Hey folks, I took apart a bone stock, non-HP, 68 440 as a donor block for my stroker conversion. I have the following parts "laying around" and I dont know if I should trash them or save them. Can anyone comment on these items?

Stock 440 Pistons, rods, etc.
Forged Cranks (nice shape)
Oil Pump (new high pressure one going to be ordered for the stroker)
Harmonic Balancer (do these things go "bad"?)
Stock cam (might make a nice crowd control device)
Water Pump housing (should I keep or replace with a newer unit)?

Thanks for any comments. I figure the crank is worth somehthing and currently have it hanging from the rafters.

Mike,
If that water pump housing has the main outlet on the drivers side and will fit on my 383, I would be interested.   They are sometimes on ebay but I always seem to miss them.  I need one because my plug on top is frozen and I want to put an external temp gauge in there.

Anyways, I wouldn't toss them just yet, maybe someone can use them. Except the cam of course.  Used cam is no good without the lifters IMO and then there is the break in etc... also if you didn't label each lifter to match each lobe it's done anyway. They are reasonably priced so that one to me would be a throwaway, except for the aforementioned crowd stabilizer of course.

Let me know on that housing please.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Just read it again, if the water pump housing is good, no reason to replace it unless you have a desire to go aluminum, but make sure you get an aluminum water pump to match.  Dissimilar metals and heat/expansion don't get along and that spells LEAK!!!

I doubt they have any real value at all so I'm thinking that maybe you should send them to me. ;)

You just knew that someone would offer right?

Mfr426

Thanks GTX...I'll consider your generous offer...

I'm your neighbor here in Pa :2thumbs:. I'll be up to pick them up. I'm doing a stock 440 now.

the crank should be worth about a 100 bucks id guess, the balancer mabe 30?     the water pump housing 30-50?  the rods 30?  pistons, oil pump, and cam are trash imo.

mike,  you might be able to get that plug out by welding a bolt in it,   the heat from welding will free it up, and the bolt will give you something better to get at with  a socket than the crappy plug. ive done that a few times with good success

That's a great idea.  I do think I asked this on another thread a while ago but couldn't remember if that one had been suggested.

Thanks

Thanks All, I was sort of asking if the pistons, rod, etc were trash. I think they are...

I dont really want to sell anything...just wondering if I should trash some of this stuff.

Rods & crank are definatly usable  especially for someone wanting to do a 400 /451 stroker
