I've got a single field alt. collecting dust that I got from NAPA about two years ago. I barely used it, then switched to a dual field alt. so I could use a solid state voltage regulator. Just had to add one wire. My charging system is much happier.

Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

I'm confused , with a one wire you don't need a reg , right ? Do they even make a natural finish one wire ?

BrianShaughnessy

I like my powermaster... but it's chrome - and dual field externally regulated.   I never liked working on that GM one wire stuff - even on a GM.

Otherwise...

Looks like I'm the one who is confused. When you said one wire alt. I thought you were talking about original equipment that mopars came with. They had the external mechanical regulator. Your talking about a GM style alternator.

No , No GM on my car , its a older round style alt with int reg , hence the name one wire .

You are mistaking "one wire" with a single field if you are talking about a Chrysler alternator.

Nacho-RT74

One wires were called those with one field alts I think.... there is not a Mopar JUST ONE WIRE... minimun wires were two, main stud one what is positive output to amm, and a green one coming from regulator and feeds positive input to brush. Those are round back alts

both Ground are driven by chassis ( input and output )

I called a buddy , He has a powermaster one wire , it has a very small reg screwed to the back of it . You do away with the factory firewall reg .

Nacho-RT74

then it must be a constant powered regulator, since is not coming from ignition key like original and is feeded directly from batt througt ammeter and starter relay stud.

Thats the puppy ! I want to move my electrical system out of the stone age !!!!!!!!!!!

Nacho-RT74

BLAH, BLAH,  :blahblah:

That's just a squared back from lates 70s with stator hidden by external case ( like mine ) with just a regulator added on to case. No big deal.

You can find on ANY lates 70s or earlier 80s Mopar car on junkyard that same alt maybe paying just $20 or maybe less and add the regulator attaching on to case and will get the same.

With that you are not moving from stone age, just getting an "upgraded" alt ( if we can say really upgraded )

If you want TO MOVE from "stone age" you will need to change the alt for a different one like modern cars spending same money that this one.

that's not a big move really

Here is my alt MOPAR original. You can see is the same that the Powermaster one with just the external regulator added ( chrommed box attached on side ). is just a regulator location movement

and I spend $30 for that one. is able to drive same power, or maybe more.

difference between this alt and your actually one is just the stator is around one milimeter wider what makes more magnetic field capture. This lates alt hides the stator center with same case, different than earliers where is exposed.

Another difference is round backs alts are with diodes pressure located in to case, instead square backs alts where are welded on to a plate what is bolted on to case

Another difference is round backs alt are regulated by positive ( field arriving ) and squarebacks ( earliers with smaller stator and laters with bigger stators ) are regulated by negative by the extra field.

Trust me when I say is not a MOVE from "stone age". Only worths because is a new alt, but no a NEWER alt. Spend the money if you want just a new alt.

Any "upgrade" you get take in mind you need WIRING upgrade with heavier wire and "bypassing" the bulkhead or running parallel wires to the actually ones but throught firewall with a grommet... THATS THE FIRST MOVE after any alt change.
