I assume that you are talking about these that I first posted in B&W on Moparts several years ago.  I later posted the color versions show below...

I took these photos in the early 1980s on I-10, East of San Antonio.  The owner was from the Houston area, and is definitely not the one shown above.

That car still amazes me every time I see it.  Wasn't the story behind it that the owner had a disability and this mod allowed him to enter & drive the car?  Am I all wet on that recollection?

Yes, the owner was a quadraplegic (sp?) who loved the Superbirds.  With the modification, the owner was able to ride in the car and look out through the viewing window above the roof.  The driver told me that the center section of the bumper was hinged so it would pivot out of the way, and a ramp would be extended for the owner to get into the enclosure.  The car was modified in the 1970s when few people cared about the wing cars, but was done for all the right reasons... the owner loved that car!  I have heard several rumors about where the car is now, but have not been able to confirm any of them.

I personally would love to see that car stay in the same shape with the camper shell. makes it all that more unique.

One of the original Lincoln Zephyrs has been converted for wheelchair use somewhere around my neck of the woods.  I see it at car shows every now and again and it's an amazing restoration but has been modified for the owner to drive onto a ramp and into the car.  I admire the man for doing that because no one should be denied participation in this hobby (except maybe for those knuckleheads who jumped that RT Charger last summer).  But I think if I bought that Superbird, I'd restore it stock and have some kind of tribute to it's past to display with it.

Oh you mean the same chevy guys that are now getting into mopars and gonna repop the full quarters and door skins and fenders.  I didn't forget their name.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Ghoste

Those are the ones.  IF they come through with those, and IF they are affordable, and IF the qulaity is first rate, then MAYBE they can be forgiven for wrecking that car.  But I'm not sure I could be convinced.

Here's a bit of information that was posted on Moparts, possibly re: the two Canadian Superbirds in question.
From "Furyman":
Was that bird a column shift auto 6bbl? If so ,I think Len Weiler of Walkerton Ontario bought it in the mid 80's....I remember he bought a rough one from the Hamilton area.
Other Ontario birds from the 80's:
RM23V0A173742: This ones got a good story...it was flying along a back road somewhere in south western ontario way back in the early mid 70's..a Menonite horse and buggy pulled out...Superbird rolled over (rumour has it hit the buggy) and was written off. Ended up in a wrecking yard. Dave Southen (first Canadian MMCI director) bought it out of a yard for $50 as a parts car for his 4 bbl bird. He broke the back window trying to remove it(amazing it didn't pop on rollover). It's since flipped hands 10 times...I think the remains are in John Cherrys yard....tags went missing in the mid 80's along with the rear window plug and any other good bits.
Speaking of John C...he also restored in 1982 another EV2 'Bird 162310 that was written off in 1971 or 1972 with 23,000 on the clock. I don't know where it is now.
The nicest Ontario 'Bird was also in Hamilton...the old man's 'Bird on the mountain' in Hamilton....under 10k miles finally sold in late the 1990's for what was huge money at the time..and it's still around Barrie.
Another buddy bought a bondo'd 6bbl 4 gear 'Bird for $2500 out of Toronto way back...it had nice big fender flares and a 400BB...he still has it and it's only 5 minutes from my shop.
Every once in a while I see a yellow blur....

Dave Southen had a 440 4 bbl bird 163474...he came by my parent's place in 1979 or 1980 and tossed me the keys for the weekend! (It didn't blow up!)
Last I heard, it was in British Columbia.
There is another low mileage 'Bird in Toronto with a retro paint job...a one owner 'Bird (Don C) ....the last time I saw it (1980) it was beautiful...one of those 70's custom paint jobs like those two 1971 GTX's had, but in candy red.
And the coolest Canuk 'Bird story...a Hemi stick car sold new around Thunder Bay..FY1...blew up real good with 1000 miles....got a warranty motor...blew up again....then the owner pulled out the real healthy 383 out of his 1964 Polara and put it in the 'Bird and went ice racing for a few seasons.
He still has it ...under 2000 miles.....in a barn in a Northern Ontario hunting camp with an ice cutter sitting on the roof ...covered in junk.
Won't sell it...but stops by every couple of years to ask "whats it worth now?"

Dave Southen, now there's a name I haven't heard in nearly twenty years.  Last I heard he had given up on cars and was bent on becoming a real estate magnate in London.

Definitely an Old Timer

I'm taking the warning that this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days, and posting anyway. Even though I'm a newby here, as my handle says, I'm definitely an old timer. Much of the discussion in this thread surrounded two Superbirds that I used to own around a half million years ago.

I am truly curious who "Furyman" is as I have no recollection of lending my Superbird to someone's son in 1979 or 1980 for a weekend, unless "Furyman" is John Cherry's son (that's certainly a possibility, although my recollection was that John's son at the time was like 9 or something). Any help here?

So, yes, this is Dave Southen, back from the dead. In that respect "Ghoste" was right - I did disappear (maybe I was the ghost). Anyway I have bought a couple cars recently - a 1968 Newport and a 1973 Imperial - my daily drivers back in the day, so I'm re-living old times. I use the Newport as a driver. The Imperial (triple black) needs work and is in storage.

I've been looking to buy another muscle car, but would give a pass to another 'bird - it was way too difficult a car to own - vandalism (twice), parking aggravation etc. I've been looking at 1967 B bodies and wouldn't turn down a proper 1968 - 1970 Charger. One benefit of buying now is that I finally can afford to keep whatever I buy - other old timers from this era may remember I sold my 'bird and my hemi Satellite to finance going to school in England.

I'd be pleased to get re-acquainted with buddies from way back when. I still see John Brain, Bill Veens, and Tim Fennell (remember Tim - he was the British director of the Mopar Muscle Club when I was the Canadian Director back in 1980 - I just visited Tim in England in May).

I regret not being able to attend Moparfest this year, because it would be a good way to see many of you again.

Cheers everyone.

Dave

p.s. I'll scare up some old photos and post them when I find them.

Definitely an Old Timer

As threatened, here's an old Superbird shot from I think the spring of 1981. Anyone recognize any of the cars or the setting. That's Bill Veens' gut on the right.

Hope the photo comes through o.k. or I will need a lesson in attaching photos.

I recognize the Hemi four door, the Red Hemi Charger with the two guys peaking in the drivers window, the one '67 you can see to the right is probably a Hemi car to.  I've got a bunch of slides from that meet.

Just how exactly are you related to Dave Tebbutt? Does he still have his Daytona (which I NEVER saw, even back then). The red Charger belonged to Drew from Hamilton in those days, although Mike Jardine bought the car sometime in the mid '80's. While I have not spoken to Mike in a VERY long time, I'd be surprised if he still does not own the car. The last mention of the '66 hemi four door, Len Weiler's car then, was last year when it was for sale for megabucks on ebay. I spoke to the owner who lives in Las Vegas - guy owns another hemi four door as well. The '67 was probably Ray Dupuis' GTX. You can just see the spoiler of my old Superbird through the spoiler of the black Superbird.

Anybody else from this forum at that meet - National Hemi Owners Association - Region 9 (Canada) meet at Harold Davey's cottage in Sauble Beach?

This sure sounds like the car that Jim M just finished restoring and returned back to WPG to show it at the spring car show.
