Hay everybody be sure to watch Dirty Jobs tonight on Discovery. They were in my town filming our salt mine. My friend Myron is on the show. He said that Mike Rowe was a cool guy and very funny.

While on the topic of salt mines:

I recall sometime ago that someone famous, I'm thinking Johnny Carson not Todd Wilson, had stored his collection of cars underground in a salt mine. 

Anyone else ever hear of something like this?

EDIT - after a bit of quick research I realize that there is in fact storage facilities in the KS mine however they do not store automobiles.  Many other items, but not vehicles.

My daughter loves watching that show & sometimes I'll watch along with her. Just the other day he had his arm up a cow's ass trying to see if it was pregnant. I was tempted to tell her that's how people get checked too, in hopes that she avoids dating.

Of all the places I would NOT want to store the car I have put so much effort into, or any car for that matter, a salt mine would have to be about at the top of the list. Granted, it might be better than storing it at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, but not by much.

Under Ground vaults and Storage is a company here in town. Been around a long time. They take over the caverns after things have been mined and store things there for people. Its a very safe place to keep things.

While not practical to do that Kab  it would be very well preserved. Salt by itself does not cause rust.

Mike Rowe is more than a cool guy. He is awesome!!!

I absolutely love that show!

My friend said he is very down to earth guy and funny and witty about stuff in person just like on the show. Has a way of saying something funny with just a few words or actions. Since I been watching the show I hear is voice in all kinds of shows. He does a lot of narration for other tv shows and he does a lot of narration on childrens videos. Co writes and sings some of the soungs. He used to be an opera singer!!


The day before the filming a producer showed up to look around and then the next day Mike and the camera crew showed up and started filming and doing stuff. No real acting or planned things they just filmed an went with the workers.

We dont want them at the train yard. All our boss's would fire us for seeing us break all the rules while watching the show.


A little history of Hutchinson.   That salt plant on tv tonight is the only mine plant in town. We have 2 other salt plants, Cargil and Morton Salt.  They use brine well methods where they pump hot water into the ground and eat out giant caverns and pump the salt water baclk up. Thats where your table salt comes from.


The plant on tv tonight was part of Carey Salt Company that really was a big part in building this town. Next to this plant was their brine plant. They shut it down a few years ago and tore it down.  The mine side was sold off and continues to run with a small crew. Between the mine and the brine plants that area was a seriously busy part of our town. They had their own railroad H&N railroad that served both plants and then would give us big railroads the cars to go places. The original Carey familys still live in town here. theres been 3 and 4 generations of family born rich from salt.  They did a lot for this city but in the end  the big corporations take over and it becomes all about profit and stock prices. It created the split and eventual shut down which cost us a lot of jobs here.

Unknown to most and they didnt say anything about it is the Under Ground Vaults and storage which continues to run.   They are also building a Museum out there as well and have dug a new shaft with an elevator down. The museum WILL BE UNDERGROUND and should open this year.

My wife and I watch the show all the time... Mike seems to have a great sense of humor and seems to have a lot of fun with the show... my question is though, how do you from being and opera singer to sticking one's hand up a cows ass?
