Yet another question! I am hoping to work on dropping my rear out of the coronet. I am thinking it shouldn't be too bad, but who knows. Any tips would be great, or if you want to tell me how to take it out period would be cool too! Thanks for all your help! Zack-

8 1/4 rear
No drive shaft

Jack up the car and support with jackstands.  Remove the shocks----I assume you will be replacing them.  Save the U-bolt/shock attaching plates being careful to not damage them when you cut the brake cables and u-bolts with an angle grinder fitted wtih a cutoff wheel being careful to not catch anything on fire.  Of course, you have removed the wheels.  And drive shaft is removed.  Now the fun part.  You can use a floor jack to raise the rearend up and pull over the springs.  This is easy if you are working on a smooth concrete floor.  Hopefully you won't have to remove the rear shackles.  I have removed these without taking the springs loose.  Be real careful as these rearends are heavy and letting one get out of control could be harmful to your appendages.  Are you changing the rear for an 8-3/4.  If so, I am not sure if any of the brake hardware will interchange but I don't think it does.  But 10 inch drums are easily found in junkyards for the 8-3/4----leastways, for the time being.  And the brake cables are all available new from the aftermarket.

i always swap the rear end by removing the rear shackles. before you start I'd go ahead and soak the ubolts down every night for a couple nights then MAYBE they'll come loose and you want have to cut them. oh ya, when you drop the driveshaft, put tape around the caps so they dont come off while your pulling the rear end. I usually leave the driveshaft in and just move it to the side.

Have fun with it.
Did you find a 68-70 B body 8 3/4 rear?

I am upgrading to an 8 3/4, but it is out of a 71 Challenger. It will fit, but I have to move the brackets in a few inches. I will get a B body rear one day, just not today... :-[... unless you wana trade for my 71 rear ;D. I got the rear up and soaked everything... but it looks like I will be doing some cutting tonight. I will keep ya posted, and feel free to give me anymore tips!

The E-body rear is a lot wider, end to end and a tough fit, cutting off the spring perches and welding on new ones. You will then need wheels with a deep offset to keep them in the wheel wells. I don't think you'll have much trouble trading or selling the E-body rear to get yourself the correct B-body piece and its a lot less work. As far as the "U" bolts go, just cut them, you won't be reusing them anyway, get new ones. I'm not trying to spend your money but its a lot safer this way, good luck.

we took out our rear on the charger...word to the wise...have a lift, somethng to prop your rear up on, and some real good tools.  Remember to keep all your U joints and blots just in case!  And if the rear is the original...it will take a lot of elbow grease to get it off.
