I just picked up a 1968 Dodge Charger Slant 6.  I was wondering if anyone knows where the numbers are to tell if it is numbers matching to the charger?

It is a B code charger so I know it came with one, I just need to figure out if it came with this one.

okay, so google up "mopar vin decoder" and type in the vin tag and it will come up with the info on the car such as engine. Then look at ur car at see if it matches. And u can do the same with the fender tag. Just google up "mopar fender tag decoder" for that. ;)

I am sorry, I was not very clear.  I need to know where the numbers would be on the block.  I am also wondering where the date for the engine would be on the block.

If I remember right, 1968s did not have the full VIN stamped on the engine block and the vin engine stamping only started part way through production for that year.  Please correct me as I may be wrong on this, but that is what I remember off of the top of my head (I think I read it in an old article).  Good to see another /6 second gen Charger being saved. :icon_smile_cool:  BTW-GG numbers on the 1968 /6 Charger with the three on the tree manual is wrong (there has been a handful of them found, not just one when he wrote the book) so don't take that as gospel on those particular Chargers.  Your best bet on finding out specific information on your car is the TDC registry as Wayne loves to hear about the oddball ones.......

Thanks for the info.  The 68 I just picked up is automatic.  I just wonder out of the 904 that they say were made, how many still have the original slant 6 in them???

Chad L. Magee

Probably not many.  Most were either parted out or became drag race projects.  Automatics were optioned more than the manual in the /6 that year, but I have not come across too many automatics (I found at least four manual ones over the years).  I have only ran across one other (than mine) 1970 /6 Charger that had its orginal engine and transmission (but the guy took them out during a conversion to a Daytona clone last I knew).  There may be another 1970 /6 in Texas (per the TDC photos), but I have yet to see the car myself.  So, chances are that you have a rarer Charger than you think.....

I just want to make sure that engine is the right one for the car.  I can't find any numbers on the block.

Not just VIN mumbers, I don't even see any casting numbers or date codes.

/6 chargers are a classic case of "rare does not mean desireable"  as far as collectibility goes.

I am not after a car that is desireable, but different.

It is not everyday you see a charger, let alone a charger with a slant 6.

dkn1997-  True, but if you want to stand out in a huge crowd at a large show, show up in one of those.  Trust me, it will stand out alot, even in a genric car show (which I have done with mine).  350+ cars and mine got the most questions by far.  Also, if you ever plan on owning a complete set of second gen Chargers with every avalible engine option (something I am proceding to do), you have to include one of the /6s.  That is something no one else has done before, even Chrysler does not have a complete set.  I believe you should have fun in your hobby and not look at it as purely an investment to get $ out at the end.....

It looks like you are close to doing it.

I only need a 440 six pack second gen Charger and a 426 hemi second gen Charger for the complete engine set.  Once that is done, I will start on the model set (need the aeros for that).  I have a lead on the 440 six pack (a white and black 70 RT/SE column shift) and know where a certain hemi Charger is (a barn find is all I will say).  My lifetime goal is to own at one time a complete year, model, engine, and transmission set of every possilble 1968-70 Charger built during that time (yes, I set lofty goals).  Chances are that it is impossible due to the one of one 1970 Charger 500 SE /6 car that may not still exist......

There will be a large date code on the side of the block, but there was no Vin
or partial fender tag numbers stamped on the block, only on HP or Hemi engines.

I agree.  I think it's actually pretty cool. I should have elaborated on my desireable comment.  I was talking from a pure resale dollars standpoint, I should not have said collectiblily.  I just assumed that he partly wanted to know if was worth more money because of it's rarity.  you could put a 4cylinder in a 2nd gen charger and it would still be cool.

Well, it is the matching engine.  I had a feeling it was, but you just never know.

This should be a fun one to put back together.

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.
