That really sucks. :'(

Speaking of losing a bunch of cars in fires...I got thinking today that I haven't heard Reggie Jackson's name come up in the musclecar world lately. Does anyone know if he ever got back into the collecting craze after his tragic loss in the late 80's? I remember a few years later, his house burned down too...I'm thinking either someone had it out for him, or he just had really bad luck.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

From moparstyle.com. "Yes, the car is here in Wisconsin. It is U0A166169. There was a major garage fire in November of 1999. Employees of the owner were working on a truck with a propane tank inside or adjacent to the building where the collector cars were kept. Something related to a dry cleaning business he owned. The vehicle had a propane leak. When the garage doors were opened and the furnace kicked on - BOOM! The owner had something like 60 cars that all went up. Most cars had full fuel tanks. This was one of the lucky ones.

The paint job on it was done for the Bicentennial in 1976. It's a 4-speed car with a white interior and buckets.

A melted chunk of the wing was on Ebay several years ago as a souvenier."

Quote from the owners son below.   I believe they still own the Bird.

"Well, we had 400 cars," says Lance Tarnutzer. "Unfortunately we suffered a major fire at one of our storage facilities a few years ago, and that fire caused us to lose a lot of our favorite cars." Lance is refering to a 1999 fire that quickly consumed a 20,000 square foot warehouse that housed nearly 100 of the Tarnutzer's more favorite cars. The fire ravaged the collection and left a majority of the cars as nothing more than rusty lumps of vintage sheet metal.

"We lost cars like our Plymouth Superbird, some Shelbys, a GTO Judge convertible, a Buick GS Stage 1 convertible and a bunch of other irreplaceable cars," says Dick Tarnutzer. Dick began collecting cars in the late 60's, and has prided himself on maintaining what was once the world's largest collection of Indianappolis 500 pace cars. "But," he says with a strong hint of sadness, "We still have a lot of great cars, and we're always adding a few here and there."

The museum sits just off Highway 12, next to The Deer Park and across from Riverview Family Park (an amusement park complete with go-karts, various rides, miniature golf and more). The building is a bit rustic, but it matches its surrounding environment well. A vintage dry-cleaning delivery vehicle greets visitors as they enter the museum's front door.

This thread brings back some uncomfortable memories for me. Not long ago I nearly toasted all my cars at once when my 69 Charger R/T (ironically nicknamed Satan) caught fire due to a fuel leak upon start up. Within seconds there were flames reaching the garage ceiling (Hood was up). Now many years ago, when I was young, I happened to be in a local Salvage yard when a guy was killed while using a torch to cut a car up and ignited the fuel tank. That was a valuable lesson learned, and since then always have a couple of LARGE fire extinguishers around. Fortunately, in 30 odd years of welding I have never had to use one. Putting the Charger fire out I emptied a large C02 Extinguisher. At the time I did`nt panic, because, hey, thats what I had fire extinguishers for and there was no damage done apart from some black soot from the burning fuel. It was not until later it freaked me out thinking of the possible consequences had I not been prepared. Please Guys, get yourself some BIG extinguishers, and carry them around in your cars also!
