Question for cops in here or maybe MP's?

I know there are or were some cops in here and I have a question about K9 dogs maybe they can answer.

I've been told that S&R dogs can not ever have any bite training but I sort of wonder about the K9 dogs you see on tv.
When they send a dog to track a bad guy do these dogs necessarily have bite training or are some just for tracking and not for restraint and control of the subject?
My reason for asking is because I used to know a guy here who trained and handled K9 dogs for one of the local departments. I definitely would not want his dogs coming after me. My brother was also a handler while in the Air force and his dog was not only for tracking but I've seen on tv where they just seem to use the dog to locate in woods etc but when the bad guy refuses to come out they don't send in the dog and have to go in after him themselves.
Are some for tracking and attack and some only for tracking?

We train our dogs in our club for tracking and bite work, I thought the police did the same training and then more.

I am not an expert but have spent 4 years in search and rescue with a Shepperd group in Washington. Our dogs are trained for searching only. There is no need for them to be defensive because any one found by these dogs would be glad to be found. Couldn't begin to think how many hours are spent training these dogs. The K-9 units on the other hand as you can guess deal with a whole different type of people that don't want to be found. I would think that they have as much time spent on learning on how to track as they do being defensive, and how to stop someone and HOLD them.
Hope this helps.

I can only respond from my LE experience.  I am unaware of non S&R dogs that are only trackers.  K9 are both track and bite dogs and numerous are crossed trained with drugs and bomb.  Very few LE dogs are track only majority are just drugs or drugs/track.

Yeah, I thought all K9 were track and bite and S&R were track only, I forgot drug dogs too.
I know I sure wouldn't want to find out that hard way.

My stupid dog is having a hard time with tracking but she's only 14 months.

What is LE?

If you have no vision or creative spirit, you can always fall back on the way the factory did it.

Our standard LE dogs are track and bite the hell out of them dogs.  The drug dogs and bomb dogs are not.  Part of it stems from the type of dog used.  My district's drug dog is a retriever and probably couldn't be trained to be a good bite dog no matter what.  I forget what kind of dogs we use for the patrol dogs, but they're nasty SOBs usually.  Small and vicious when they need to be.  Hungarian or something.  I dunno about the bomb dogs, have never encountered one at work.

Dutch Shepherds maybe?
A bit smaller than the GSD and well known for it's K9 ability. Most definitely from the European working lines and tend to be very high drive.

Would eat my doggy up probably. She is a West German working\show line.

most of the K9 dogs aroung here are Belgian Malinois

Don't worry I have a two year old lab that is useless, except to pee in my house and wake me up barking every morning...just got a beagle who is pretty useless too....I suck with dogs and want to go into LE and be a K9 handler..probably won't pan out though.......
