pro's and contras?
I am in need to get a new pump.
The electric could make an annoying noise, no?   ;)

The electric can be loud depending on the type. Saying that the holleys are pretty much the loudiest. But it sorta fades into the background and you stop noticing it. Atleast with me :icon_smile_big: You can feed 500 hp with a mechanical fwiw. I used an electric cause my tank was leaking and I just did a crazy fuel system that would cover all my bases so I wouldnt have to tear it apart and do it again.

Like thread marshal said, the only time i really notice mine is when i first turn the ignition on. After driving it awhile i forget its there. Mine was a last resort to a problem as well. It ended up being the tank and sending unit gummed up with almost 40 years of crap so installed everything new and did away with the mechanical pump.

HV mechanical pumps are much nicer on the street

I totally agree with Chryco, a good HV Carter or Holley mechanical with the correct fuel line works fine on any warmed over big block and is a lot quieter, good luck.

:iagree: , eventually when I build up a 493 stroker I plan on using a polished Carter HV mechanical pump. So, this is what I would use on your car as well. Good luck  !

I used a cheap Carter on the 70 Cuda, wore the drive off the cam for some reason. Paid I think $35.00 for it back in the early 90's. Work's well, plus, if you need gas for a lawn mower or other car just hit the switch and start filling. Have a 4 foot fuel line I use for that, unhook the carb fuel line and hook it on and instant gas station! ;D

Started a 1970 AAR Cuda that way, slept for 12 year's! :icon_smile_dissapprove: Randy said the 340 was junk, I knew better. Won't go into details on saving the 340. Used a 8 foot line from my 70 Cuda to start his, guess mine nursed his back to life.

My 383 Cuda is pretty close to stock, header's, intake, 750 Holley and MSD. Rest is stock. Cheap carter works fine after 96,000 miles.

Noise, afer she is running cannot hear it.

I have a Holley red electric pump. Yes it is noisy. But you cant hear it over the exhaust anyway so it becomes a moot point. I do not know why they put an electric pump on it. It was that way when I bought the car. No reason to change it.

i run a holly mechanical, its never failed me.i think the electrics are more suited to the track.also think about this,if god forbid you are ever in an accident do you have an auto shutdown feature for the electric pump?or will it continue to pump fuel out all over the place?

Mine shuts off as soon as the oil psi drops.....

I put a holley red fuel pump on mine and it has been running good for 3 years. I went with electric over a mechanical because I had a vapor lock problem. I wired mine with a relay to the ignition switch rather than fuel pressure. This way I can turn on the pump for a while after it has been sitting for a long time for easy starts. I used rubber windshield wiper bushings to mount the pump so the noise isn't too bad. If you have something wrong with your charging system and your ammeter fluctuates frequently the pump will make a lot of noise. If it doesn't get hot enough for your car to vapor lock you are better off with a mechanical pump.

I use an electric...  but it's necessary for me (efi conversion).  As for running, the ECU runs a 'prime' pulse on startup (about 5 seconds), then only stays running as long as there's RPM, so safety should be OK.  It's loud when the car isn't running, but it's inaudible with the car running... Plus, it only runs a few seconds when you first turn the key on, until the car actually starts, so...  (key) WHIIIRRRRR (quiet) is the only thing I get :)
I'd run mech if I wasn't doing EFI, though.
