I for one think Dodge was right for pulling out of NASCAR in the early 70's because that is really when they pulled the "stock" from "Stock Car".
Now that the Camry is the most American car built in America I have no problem with it racing.  I hope that it beats the crap out of the "American" cars, and inspires them to work harder to compete.
:haha:   :yesnod:

I'd like to see Toyota win just to see everyone pull hissy fits.   :smilielol:

In the end, I don't really care as much about NASCAR as I used to.  I used to go to two or three races a year and would follow the series like I would follow hockey.  Since Rusty Wallace retired, I still haven't decided who I want to really cheer for.  I think now, if I have the time, I watch to see some of the driver's I despise so much do badly.  I sure wish James Hylton got into the race on Sunday as I would have loved to see a 72 year old man with no sponsorship win the race.  Now, I'll cheer for Toyota just because they're the underdog and the best part about this is that I don't care if they lose.

American heritage eh!  Now you know how the Canadians felt when Gary Bettman took the helm of the NHL (after leaving the NBA) and renamed all of the traditional conferences and divisions to make it easier to understand and follow, for who, we're not sure.  There were many other changes over the years that many traditional hockey fans were upset with but in the end, the game really hasn't changed.  Sure it was a tough pill to swallow but the true hockey fans put all of that aside and still enjoy the game for what it is, a sport.

The same will and has happened with racing.  There will be some changes and some will despise it but since you have no control over it, you might as well sit back and enjoy the racing action.  You're either a race fan or you're not.  Paint all the cars primer grey, no sponsorship decals or logos and no manufacturer logo on the car either.  Simple racing, who will cross the finish line first!

I still don't see why people whine about Toyota in NASCAR. I didn't see anywhere in the rules that said certain manufacturers were not allowed. If Dodge (a German company) doesn't get raked over the coals by all the foreign car haters then why waste time and energy crying about a Japanese company? The logic makes no sense. Of course, NASCAR makes little or no sense to me. The cars are no more "stock" than stadium trucks.

From an article I read:
QuoteThe company projects U.S. sales this year of 2.5 million vehicles, and more than half will be produced at 15 plants in North America (10 in the USA). More than 90% of Camrys — the country's best-selling car in nine of the last 10 years — were built in Georgetown, Ky. Among its manufacturing, marketing and distribution facilities, Toyota counts 33,000 American workers, and the number swells to nearly 150,000 when dealerships are included.

Two things can happen:
1. They lose and everyone feels vindicated for proving that we can beat the "Japs" on our own turf.
2. They win and everyone makes excuses for why the American (German) cars were at a disadvantage. Roush is already whining about Toyota's race budget.

I think competition is good. Dodge's past victories would have been meaningless if there were no other competitors. Toyota makes V8 engines and cars for the US market, they meet all the NASCAR requirements, and they have a healthy racing budget so they can stick it out over the long haul. They have been also successful in nearly every form of motorsports they have tried. I would think that the best selling car in America should represent American's interest in a race series that only Americans really care about.

Succesful? Like I said in an earlier post - they've spent a crap load of money in F-1 (the only league that you can compare NASCAR to in terms of $ and competition) and they havent won a single race in 7 years. They left the IRL under the guise of wanting to concentrate on NASCAR *cough*bulls1t*cough* - Honda kept beating them, so they left. They've been pretty dominant in the Craftsman Trucks the last 2 years or so, but you gotta figure that the other manufacturers scaled back their support (or pulled out altogether, like Dodge) to get ready for them in Cup. That leaves them with what...the Mickey Thompson Truck series? Please....

Yeah, they do. It's a 5.7L V8 that they put in their Tundras. It actually makes more power than the  5.7L Hemi (380  vs. 340) - not too shabby.

NASCAR comparable to F1? Are you serious? I think Ferarri's racing budget is more than all the NASCAR teams combined. Ok, maybe not quite. :D There are very, very few limitations in F1 when it comes to technology and there is no attempt at parity so the team with the biggest budget has the advantage. The championship is practically guaranteed to one of the top three teams and everyone else is just an obstacle. Toyota is not yet in the top three but they have a chance. American cars and drivers have had much less success. Ford last won a Championship in 1981.

But back to Toyota, you may want to do some research. Toyota has their own race series for one thing. I guess when you name is on every trophy it doesn't matter who wins does it? ;)

Off Road with Ivan "Ironman" Stewart, Rod Millen, Steve Millen, and Robby Gordon:
MTEG Stadium Victories: 50
MTEG Stadium Driver's Championships: 9
MTEG Stadium Manufacturer's Championships: 11
SCORE Desert Off Road Victories: 33
SCORE Off Road World Championship Victories: 4
SCORE Off Road Overall Championships: 2
SCORE Off Road Unlimited Class Championships: 2
SCORE Trophy-Truck Championship: 1
SCORE Off Road Overall Driver's Championship: 1
CORR Pro-Lite Championships: 8
CORR Pro 4 Championships: 3
CORR Manufacturer's Championships: 6
HDRA Desert Victory: 1
Total Off Road Victories: 116
Total Off Road Driver's Championships: 17
Total Off Road Manufacturer's Championships: 17
Total Baja 500 Victories: 9
Total Baja 1000 Victories: 1

Rod Millen and Robbie Gordon haven't done too terribly at Pike's Peak either. ;)

Craftsman Truck Series: Toyota won 25 of 75 races entered in first three years with 32 poles and 133 top five finishes. Last year they won the driver's and manufacturer's championships. Of course, I can outrun some of those guys on my bicycle (but not the ones winning).

They were kicking butt in Rally cars until they made the switch to F1. In their final year (1999) they won the manufacturers championship after coming in second the year before.

Endurance racing: Lexus (Toyota) has won 15 races and started on the pole 21 times in 40 races over the last three years. They won the  manufacturer's championship last year and the driver's championship in 2004. Interestingly, Chip Ganassi owns the team that won the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2006 (and now 2007 as well) and won the team championship two of the last three years (including 13 other victories).

They also drag race in the NHRA Sport-Compact series along with having a sprint car team or two.

I'm sure I missed some...

2005 Formula 1 budgets:

Toyota - $449 million :P
Ferrari - $432 million
McLaren Mercedes - $419 million
Honda - $360 million
BMW - $360 million
Renault(the team that won that year) - $287 million
Sauber - $161 million
Red Bull - $139 million
Jordan - $104 million
Minardi - $50 million

For comparisions sake I think a top Cup car is something like $15million.
Personally, I'm not going to get involved in the debate...just supplying some additional info :icon_smile_wink:.

Also, Toyota DID win 3 rallye championships, but were BANNED by the FIA after being caught with a trick turbo :rotz:.  Looong story - google it.   The switch to F1 was after their two failed LeMans attempts in '98 and '99 in the beau-ti-ful Gt-One (V8 car) :icon_smile_wink:.

They did have tremendous success in the Group C /GTP cars in late 80s.  Anyone remember Dan Gurney's team? ;D

Well the world has changed.  This is an old subject.  Are there ANY all American cars anymore?  A couple of years ago I tried to live a year just buying American made products.  Could not do it !!!!!  We better all start learning Chinese.  Now if those intergalactic travelers show up at NASCAR with a car, I'LL BE PISSED.     Bob

Yeah, well, they better get organized soon since there's a new kid on the block coming to F1... Hyundai!
http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/23/hyundai-to-enter-f1-in-2010/

Back to DC - our good buddy Dieter seems to be rather disappointed with Mercedes 3rd place last year and has publicly stated that he won't be satisfied without a #1 finish this year. Toyota (with it's massive budget) is the only manufacturer using roughly the same setup and same drivers for this year so they have the data/testing advantage. Someone still has to drive the cars though and MB lost their best driver to Ferarri and Toyota has... uh, well, they need some work on that.

I read a recent article that quotes Evernham as saying a Nextel team's budget is $20 million. He does not state if that is the race budget, R&D budget, marketing budget, or the fuel budget for the transport rigs. I have to question it since Roush upped their R&D budget by 10 million this year. I think the manufacturers contribute to their own advertising/marketing budget too so that may not appear as money going to the team.

Yeah the Hyundai rumor won't die.  :o  Nor will the VW-to-f1 rumor.  I even heard a "Porsche to Nascar" rumor a couple of years ago.  I think that's a bit of a stretch. :pity:

But there are also rumors that DC is trying to buy McLaren outright....we'll see...(I doubt we'll see Alonso behind the wheel of new Charger :icon_smile_tongue:).

There is an interesting article with Mike Gascoyne in which he absolutely lambasts the management of Toyota's F1 team.  (But then again what would you expect from a guy who was just fired... :icon_smile_wink:).  But his impression was that the team was more "managers" than "racers."  And lets not forget that there is still that pending lawsuit from Ferrari charging that the TF103 was a copy of the Ferrari F2002.  Whatever...such is Formula 1.. ::) ;D.

So I would hope for Toyota's sake that they are under different management (which I'm guessing they are) for their Nascar program.  But I think they are like an "expansion team" in any other sport.  They'll struggle to find their legs at first and then (because of the equality of Nascar's rulebook) will eventually be competitive.....just like in the truck series. ;)

I'm sorry, when did Ford offer a V8 in the Taurus? How abut the current Fusion? Wasn't Dodge running a Stratus or something before the current Charger? Aren't they discussing a switch to the Avenger body? Apparently it's not in the rules that a "stock" racing car needs to be running an engine that is currently available in the same "stock" platform. Toyota won in the Goody's Dash series with a V6 powered Celica (also not available).

The Toyota V8 *is* available in the Tundra truck (which many people didn't believe three years ago when they got into the Craftsman series).

I'm smiling. Really. I honestly asked that exact question a few years ago when the four door cars magically lost two of their doors and gained two extra cylinders.
